"In chess, you can just give up, can't you?"

- from the cricket commentary on Talksport just a moment ago.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Leontxo Garcia told us this at dinner in Gibraltar Monday night.

Not sure that Leontxo García saying something in conversation constitutes a media comment, but whatever
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I'm currently reading What We Become by Arturo Perez-Reverte, which features quite a bit of chess in the story (not for the first time cf The Flanders Panel)

Geff, that is real find. Thank you. How old-fashioned to use English descriptive in 2002.

Hi Stewart,

I blanked out the rude f-word between Bamber and Gascoigne.

I checked, could not see anymore. (if one has slipped through then I'm sorry)

Well Deep Blue made a guest appearance on Futurama on Tuesday night (it was an episode from 2016) and it was speaking descriptive. The machine is introduced......

Al Gore: And our summer intern, Deep Blue, the world's foremost chess-playing computer.
Deep Blue: Bishop to knight 4.
[Gore pats Deep Blue.]
Al Gore: Not all missions can be solved with chess, Deep Blue. Someday you'll understand that.

Later Deep Blue blurts out "Pawn to Rook 8".

So far as the non-playing chess-world is concerned, descriptive has never gone away.

Looks more like he thinks Aronian has made an unpleasant smell!

Its arguable that, metaphorically speaking, that is exactly what he did :)

If so, it was somewhat one sided

Thank you Bob for finding that. I was too young to have ever known Alekhine or Flohr.
I only knew Elaine by her married name, Pritchard. She told me she remembered sitting on Vera Menchik's knee.
