ECF ought to agree sponsorship with anyone
I trust you are nowhere near membership of the Governance Committee.

Your position is not merely "morally dubious", as if it were solely a matter of differing ethical judgements. It would in certain circumstances invite ECF to enter unlawful transactions. I have in mind breaches of Anti-Money-Laundering legislation and similar regulations which require organisations to secure the provenance and legal integrity of monies they receive.

I'd have thought the Scheinberg sponsorship would merit at least some pause for thought, including a view from the Governance Committee

Let the Governance Committee deal with it. And the ECF.
I voted YES. Are there any other sponsorships out there for the England Chess Team?

Perhaps that would be a wise precaution, but I don't expect that they would take very long to form a view. Unlike Kirsan's case, where the US Treasury was clearly politically motivated to be as vindictive as possible, I doubt that the IRS is minded to take action against any recipient of largesse from one of their targets.

I fear you're right. But it depends how much due diligence they're willing to undertake. Given that some members of the Committee struggle to make headway into a light breeze, I'm not optimistic here either

There's the evidence of the Isle of Man tournament

Nick Grey >ECF ought to agree sponsorship with anyone.<

The BCF decided NOT to accept, or seek, sponsorship from cigarettes companies. I thought it better to have the debate BEFORE any specific offer was made.

It is a difficult one - how do you decide which alleged offences are serious enough to not want their money?

Suppose a rich woman offers lots of money for a tournament, but she is being pursued by a country for allegedly not wearing a head covering, or for driving a car?

Suppose someone is accused of assault, but is cleared by the investigating committee, shortly after the accused's company produces very significant sponsorship for a national event?

In the West, you would perhaps find it reasonable to take the money in the first case, but not the second?

I wonder if “accept money from anyone” would include taking sponsorship from the software company that publishes “Diana Crash Simulator”.

As Streatham Rovers FC have just done.

Correction: It’s “Diana Crash Simulator 2”.

That is a parody account:

The 'football club' is a parody at least. The computer game probably is as well.

It does seem to be a parody, but these guys may offer sponsorship...

And why - if we are taking money from anybody - wouldn’t we snap off their hands?

Or, are we saying that there is a limit - be it DCS2 or novichok - and we make a judgement as to where the line is drawn.

At least one supporter hung up his scarf in protest. He now runs a satirical social media account in support of a fictional team to highlight the hypocrisy he finds in a deal between an estate agent and a community club. His Streatham Rovers FC is sponsored by the equally fictional firm, Herod Eviction Services.

Definitely a real club, Chris. Don't listen to the detractors from Dynamo Catford FC.

I agree - I was trying to make that point on the Sunday AM post.

Sponsorship from tobacco companies in some sports was decided to be evil, but acceptable if they had small logos!
