Re: Junior squad/Kasparov simul in 1986
I took the photo of my younger brother at the Karpov simul.
I photographed it today from a print in my scrap album and posted on my FB timeline.

I think it is a trick of the light - it is a Karpovesque pose, and he was very slim then.

Karpov giving the simul. This was at Westergate. At the left in the Pinto picture, with white beard and glasses, my father who sat next to Tom Sweby, a Luton columnist as I was, for Basingstoke, at the time. I think GH Diggle was also in evidence. Peter Wells being local (ish) was interviewed at the start by Southern TV. When I actually saw the broadcast, that evening, I am not sure how many of the answers Karpov actually gave were left in. Karpov also presented a prize to Mandy Hepworth, who later went to live in Ireland. The World Champion was, of course, over here for Phillips & Drew. Short opted out of playing and King, I think, captained the Barden Babes. Later, when Kasparov faced a similar "indignity", he warmed up by appearing on WOGAN. I doubt Ole Tel would've have got much out of Karpov had he been lured similarly.

What an impressive memory for faces. Even with this guidance I cannot spot Cavendish and Walker. Is GH Diggle the bald man in the front row? He was certainly present as I personally invited him, being a fan of his Badmaster column in the BCM and hoping that he would write one about the Karpov simul, which he did.
I do not recall there being a team captain and think that Julian Hodgson was top board with Daniel King on two. Both were by then IMs and both had played five years earlier when the match was a Lloyds Bank clock simul over 10 boards which Karpov won 9.5-0.5 with only Tony Williams (older brother of Simon) drawing.
I think Karpov sensed during the Westergate 1982 encounter that one purpose of the occasion was revenge for 1977 and didn't enjoy the experience, although his score was really excellent considering the strength of the opposition. The exhibition two days before Phillips & Drew also tired him out for his round one game there against Short, another of the 1977 vanquished.
Before the 1984 simul he stipulated "No IMs" but he still had top board opponents with IM norms (I think Jon Levitt and Peter Wells), with Adams and Conquest lower down the order. Again Karpov proved himself an outstanding simul player and achieved a better score than in 1982.

Are we looking at the same photo? I don't see them. And whereas I can imagine that Mark might have been around given the locality and likely participation of his elder brothers, James Cavendish only "arrived" on the junior scene in 1983-4: 1982 was, I would have thought, just a bit too early for him.

There are 2 photos, Cavendish and Walker (maybe?) over to the right in the non-Pinto pic.

Badmaster was in 'Newsflash. This was occasion when Hartston revealed 'Do you realise that he is rotating ant-clockwise?' I wish we could have days like this now and I know Leonard will agree.

I was present at Botwinnik's simul at Ilford in 1967. The organizers had tried to put it in order of strength and gestured to Board 1. Botwinnik ignored them and started at Board 25 (causing some consternation) and moved round clockwise. It wasn't until I read the above that I realized why! It seems "natural" to go clockwise.

has a link to a photo of Boris Spassky in action plus my personal memories of the day. There were six simuls played simultaneously, given by Spassky (for whom the Evening Standard, which sponsored the London junior championships then, paid £1000), Evgeny Vasyukov and Alexander Kochiev(Russians who had played at Hastings just previously), Murray Chandler, Harry Golombek (to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his winning the 1929 London Boys Championship), and Dave Rumens. There might have been a seventh by Andrew Whiteley, but my memory is unsure. All simuls had 20-30 players, a mammoth organising feat by Peter Morrish and his team.

Thank you Leonard...I did not know there was an earlier forum on the 1979 simuls.
The list of players link I gave in my post above probably cannot be opened by others due to permission. This one should work:-
