"At the Nuffield Institute of Comparative Medicine (1965-89) Professor Crawford equipped and computerised his laboratory to engage in lipid nutrition and showed that deprivation of the essential fatty acids used for the brain’s structure and function resulted in loss of brain cell number in the third generation. In 1972 Crawford and Sinclair published the first description of the dependence of the brain on arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acids and drew attention to the evolutionary implications. Crawford also demonstrated clear evidence of maternal nutrition being a causative factor in low birthweight and complications or prematurity."

At least that is impressive...

Oh, since we're discussing Ray's chessgames.com page I was amused to notice this:
2009 Working on initiative with Prof Michael Crawford of the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition to develop a national and global programme to combat the effects of mental degeneration in the populace , which currently costs the UK economy alone £77,000,000,000 per annum.
Michael Crawford has never been the same since marrying Betty.

Jessica told me all about it.

As far as I can see, Crawford used to be the genuine article (mind you, if we went back as far as 1972, so did Ray) and I think his Institute was a bona fide organisation at least into the early years of this century. How precisely it went from being what it was to what it is now, I don't know, and as I say in the Kingpin piece, I've not, so far, been able to contact him, and believe me I have tried.

Note he has an interest in chess too, and was patron for a Staunton event in 2009. I have no idea of his chess ability, but I imagine he would be interested to meet a GM with an interest in the brain (one of his many work interests).

His new book, "The Brain Under Siege with D.E.Marsh Launch aimed at April 2019"

Curious entry in itself

Hi Roger. Have a look at the Institute's web page and tell me what you think. If you're unsure about anything, try the contact page, or maybe get in touch with the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital where it claims to be located. Or perhaps check out Crawford and Thabet at the Gifted Academy and see what kind of an impression you form of these people.
Hi Justin - I haven't had time, yet, to follow up your invitation in full but I'll try to do so once I've a little more time. However, I did notice that Professor Crawford now appears to be 88 years old which could well explain your difficulty contacting him via assumed place of work.

He's referencing a Seventies sitcom

Well yes, and the mad Imperial College/C&W voice-activated switchboard doesn't help either, though it doesn't follow that my efforts to contact him (or his sidekick) have been limited to that medium.

Michael Crawford then morphed into The Phantom of the Opera.

And then into a circus proprietor.

It's a funny old world...

Val Doonican and Dave Allen once did a duet proving it could be either square or flat.

" ... round as a ring" [quick shot of boxing ring] " ... so the world is square - so there!"

" ... round as an egg" [quick shot of fried egg] " ... so the world is flat - and that's that!"

Though personally I always preferred Michael Bentine's Square (actually cubic) World, which Michael F appears to be referencing.
"The chess-board is the world ..... the player on the other side is hidden from us ..... he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance."
(He doesn't let you resign and start again, either.)

Oh I was, but it wasn't as apposite as I thought - Age had muddled me and I was thinking that the presenter of that programme was also a Michael Crawford

2018 Brain Trust accounts are out, with the listed grants all going to Ray, Tony and Ray and Tony's friends.
More on their accounts, and specifically on the return of David Massey.
