Unfortunately, I think Speelman missed that he would lose the c-pawn - thought he could protect and get 2 pieces for a rook if it were taken.

After Rxc4, what does Black play?
...Nd5, I reckon. And if 2. Qa4 b5; 3. Qxb5 Rb8 and Black is in good shape

Luke, David and Mickey all doing well. England could win this convincingly.

Possibly a played-my-preparation-in-the-wrong-order experience for Adly, here?
Plot twist. White forgot what pawns can do, apparently.
Yeah, I just saw - Black went on to win! That match worth looking at - China need to win both remaining games to win the match, are better in both, but if they won neither, Egypt would nick it.

Seems Mickey's opponent played a losing blunder at move 40 (sez Stockfish).
Luke's game doesn't look that easy to win but either he or David, or both, look like scoring the extra win required.

Something is seriously amiss in the Chinese camp, it seems.

Oh, Russia v Azerbaijan isn't going quite as smoothly as Russia might have liked.

McShane has just blown all advantage, subject to his opponent finding a fairly straightforward reply (ha! which he didn't find; McShane retains his plus)

Howell is very close to a win though

Yes, Adams and Howell look good but not sure extra pawn is enough for McShane

Howell has won. We should win the other two soon. Grischuk is saving his ending.

The commentators don't seem to have noticed that Wei Yi lost as they just spoke of China winning its match. It will be 2-2.
I guess they will see it eventually.

Goryachkina, they said, has won six games in a row in the women's championship.

Grischuk has decided to draw by playing rook against took and knight. I wonder whether Safarli will feel obliged to take it the full fifty. (Didn't somebody manage to lose that in a serious game not long ago, perhaps in the Olympiad?)

The pawn was enough - England lead 2-1 with Adams clearly winning in unfinished game

I was hoping for four queens in Luke's game.

And that's a wrap.

Russia 10
India, England 9
USA 8
China 6

Egypt 2 China 2 the result of the round. They might easily have won it, too.

Jack - thanks very much. I wonder if that's the one I was thinking of?
