Egypt tomorrow but that no longer looks like the pushover it seemed yesterday.

Still, a big win is possible and if the other results went the way we'd like England could even lead after round 7.

I guess we are thinking that it goes without saying, but that was an excellent result (and performance) in the circumstances. Not only did at one point none of the top three boards look all that promising (and we were after all Black in two of them, with non-repertoire Luke having the White) but we were losing on board four from a very early stage, with no real hope of recovery.

A draw would have been quite a good result in those circumstances. But 3-1 !!

Here's hoping Gawain can play again, and then who knows what? (It might partly depend upon which China turns up, you might think).

It might be relevant that it's the penultimate round, and China are likely to need to win if they're going to have any chance of getting anything. Or it might not, because they'd want to win that match on rating strength anyway.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Might be tempting fate, but in round 7 if USA beat Russia, and Azerbaijan (who are not doing well, but showed in their win over USA what they can do on their day) beat or draw with India, then a win from England would put them top with matches against under-performing China and tail-enders Sweden to come. Even a loss to China would still likely see England finish third if we win the other two matches. India have a tough run-in, against USA and Russia - you would expect some points dropped there.

It had previously eluded me that Naiditsch has a crushing record against Karjakin, now up to 6-2.

Sweden also seem to have been without their normal board four today, only they put in another guy with the same name.

Jack - thanks very much. I wonder if that's the one I was thinking of?
But shouldn't that be a draw? 128...Rh6+ 129.Nb6+ and now Black informs the arbiter that he intends to play 129...Kb8 which makes 50 moves by each side since the last capture.

It should have been, and the arbiters commented on that as they delivered the scoresheets to me.

England ought to win a medal. Egypt are the weakest with 1/6 but that is better than their 0 before China.

Wow, yes 44 Qd2 e5
I find it hard to believe that both players simply missed that. I suppose it could have been a successful bluff.

Jones back against Egypt.
Big ratings advantage on boards 3 and 4 - similar on boards 1 and 2. C'mon lads!

Off topic, but this happened in another game not so long ago.

Black resigned, but could have played ...Rf8, when Rxf8 would have been mate - except that the draw could have been claimed with ...Rf8 as it would have been the 50th move.

Can anyone provide chapter and verse?

It was Maria Muzychuk vs. Zhansaya Abdumalik, Women's World Championship 2018. See here, also here and this Forum.

Humans also claiming the same - I mean look at the Black position! Then try to find moves that don't drop material...
