He did, and that seems to be the answer to the question as asked. There are at least five other examples of the top board at the Olympiad losing four games or more, if we include the GB teams from pre-war tournaments. I could find no such examples from World Team or European Championships.IM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2019 3:23 pmTony Miles lost four at Lucerne 1982, three of which came in the last three rounds.
"Four or more", you ask? At Munich in 1958 CH O'D Alexander lost six.

Oh, before I got sidetracked I meant to mention that the last game to finish seems to have finished even later than it might have.

Re: World Teams 2019
Board pairings, for round 9 which starts very early tomorrow, are now up at chess24.
To clarify, Russia have won the Open (and China the women's tournament) with a round to spare with 14MP.
India and England are on 11 MP and China on 10 MP (but China have 1 game point more). USA have 9MP and the same game points as us.
India have a 3 game point advantage over England but if we beat Sweden we will be second unless India beat Russia.
If we only draw and India lose then we will only be second if China fail to beat Kazakhstan. If we draw and China win, they are second and India would finish fourth.
So If India draw or win their match, then we need to better China's result. If we lose we could even be overtaken by USA and finish fifth.
I am optimistic, though, and believe we can beat Sweden and that India won't win their match.
Our match:
Adams v Grandelius; Blomqvist v McShane; Howell v Smith; Johansson v Jones.
In the other matches, Azerbaijan play Egypt and USA play Iran.

Purely for reasons of accuracy, that was out of twelve games played.IM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2019 3:23 pmTony Miles lost four at Lucerne 1982, three of which came in the last three rounds.

A word in praise of Luke McShane
He currently stands +3, and a draw in rd 9 will give him the Board 2 prize (if there is one). Given our second slot has been an under-performing problem for some time, Luke deserves plenty of credit for solving it.

And he has a French Exchange this morning, I think - only with Black a tempo down.

Barminess in Azerbaijan v Egypt, with three games drawn in 11, 12 and 14 moves respectively - and Guseinov v Fawzy, where Black was already lost by then.

Yes, but don't you normally prearrange all four? Has something gone awry?

Cautiously optimistic as England are pressing on 1, 3 and 4 with Luke slightly worse on 2.

India doing quite well against Russia though at the moment, with Nepo a piece down for not much it seems.Thomas Rendle wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2019 8:10 amCautiously optimistic as England are pressing on 1, 3 and 4 with Luke slightly worse on 2.

Oh, I see. Doesn't seem too serious. I am happy that we will win but my goodness we need to shout for Grischuk!
