Perhaps his cricket ramblings are affected by this type of smoke.

Welcome to a hazy Warner Park, where local bushfires mean there’s a strong smell of smoke in the air.

Robert Macfarlane making a claim I doubt he can stand up
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

A book cover I hadn't previously seen
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

The Paris Review interviews Ennio Morricone about chess, and not all his answers are entirely to be believed

It's a translation though, with the specialist chess terms mangled.

Currently watching 'Only Connect' on BBC2 the team The Durhamites is captained by George Twigg who was
introduced to us viewers as a very keen chess player. Currently they are getting beat by The Poptimists. 7-0.

Though not keen enough to have a grading record it would seem.

NIGERIAN REFUGEE, 8, WINS NEW YORK CHESS CONTEST

This is the heading for a small item in today's Daily Telegraph. It was lifted from the New York Times.
Tanitoluwa Adewumi who lives in a Manhattan homeless sheletr won the category for his age bracket undefeated last weekend. Tani (as he is known) learnt to play chess just over a year ago. The family left Nigeria in 2017.

BBC article here:

While Googling for this, I came across the same story, but on the BBC's Pidgin site:

https://www.bbc.com/pidgin/tori-47610616

This is "a news service in West African Pidgin English" that was launched by the BBC in 2017.

Sorry to go off topic, but the BBC's Pidgin site is a bit of a discovery. Some nice descriptions of Brexit, e.g. di Irissh border palava.

Tinder and ELO Ratings

Post by John Hodgson » Wed Mar 20, 2019 3:42 pm

[It is suggested that] "users are given a 'desirability' rating that determines where they appear in the list of suitors that flashes up on users’ smartphones, with someone judged by Tinder’s algorithms to be highly desirable getting in before someone who is not.

"Tinder admitted last week that it used to use an “Elo score”, borrowed from the world of chess, where a player goes up the rankings by beating a rival with a higher score or falling in the opposite situation. In the case of the dating app, users apparently gained points if they were liked by a top-ranked suitor and lost them if they were rejected by someone at the bottom of the pile."

I think the ECF Board should tie this in with the new grading proposals, perhaps with a combined ECF/Tinder rating adjusted every six months

He's now got an apartment according to the BBC
Tanitoluwa Adewumi is an eight-year-old US chess champion. He's also a refugee from Nigeria, whose family fled Boko Haram.

More than $180,000 (£130,000) was raised for him after he won New York State's chess championship.

The money means his family will be able to move out of the homeless shelter they've lived in for the last two years, according to reports.
