Well, the aforementioned Tony Stebbings got one in a Seniors event not so long ago.

Titles and norms can certainly be made at senior and euro individual champs by top three finishes and, of course, if you score a regular IM or GM norm by rating it counts.

Not sure of all details but certainly winning world seniors = GM title if you haven't already got it .... Vladimir Okhotnik and Jens Kristiansen at the old 60+ champs got the GM title this way in recent years (and winning the 'new' 65+ event still counts).

I know of at least two (non UK) players who have recently got final IM norms / qualified for IM title in recent years at euro champs too.

In winning last year's 65+ world seniors champs, Jansa and Balashov (second on tie break) both registered performances of way above 2600.

IIRC the first person to get the title this way was the late Janis Klovans - who was of course easily GM strength at his Soviet peak.

Sadly, in round 8 of the 50+, Keith lost to Sturua and Terry drew, putting them both out of contention for medals. The joint leaders (Sturua and Pavlovic) won in the last two rounds and the tiebreak is very close. [There are some errors in the round 7 totals given in Tim's summary for the round 8 pairings.]

In the 65+, Tony Stebbings lost in round 8 and also fell out of contention. Hope there were still some norms and good results for the England and other British and Irish players.

Keith, I was looking at your game against Sturua. The online computer engine I am using suggested 12.d6, though the assessment stops at the point where that pawn appears to be lost. Is the computer talking rubbish? Was 22.g4 the turning point in your game?

Yes I was just copying the figures given in chess24 which still seem to be wrong for some players at present.
In the last round Terry has drawn and Keith won but the site is showing their totals out of 8.

Hi Christopher, 12 d6 is one of the options, but my move is sort of considered the main line. The Grunfeld is a correct defence, against which is is therefore impossible to get anything with White against best play - unlike the Benoni or even the KI, which engines don't like.

I was a bit unlucky because Sturua told me after the game that he had faced 21...g5! himself last year, and so had spent a long time analysing it. By contrast I was making it up as I went along. 22 g4 is indeed a mistake, and better seems to be 22 Qa4 though it's very hard to understand all the subtleties over the board.

I had many very strange games here, but finally got my regulation R+P ending in the last rd to notch up a slightly disappointing 6/9 for 4th = ( 4th or 5th on tiebreak, I think.

P.S. Terry Chapman ( 5.5/9) got the 7th prize because of a deservedly good tiebreak. In the 65+ Tony Stebbings( 6/9) got the 6th prize. I had to settle for 5th ( beaten to 4th by Danielsen's better tiebreak).

The Champions were Sturua (50+) and Kristiansen ( 65+).

Thanks for the updates and explanations. Were there any norms (is it possible to look that up anywhere rather than try and calculate it)?

I haven't heard it mentioned that there were any. Certainly Terry was in with a good shout for an IM norm for much of the event. Am I right in thinking he would have been allowed to discard his win against the low rated opponent from round 2? In the end, again discounting that game, Terry scored 4.5/8 v a 2339 field.

I should also mention that Roy Hughes, in the 50+, performed at 182 points above his Elo rating.

I don't think you can discard a win from a 9-round event unless the event is one that specifically allows 8-round norms. And 4½/8 is not enough against a 2339 field even if you could - it would need to be 5½.

Thanks Jack and yes that's what I calculated. I think Terry performed at 2382 in the other 8 games. Chess-Results.com simply throw the win v the 1085 rated player into the mix to produce an unfair TPR of 2280.

For IM norm purposes, that 1085 can be treated as a 2050, and that bumps Terry's effective TPR up to 2387. Which is good, but some way off enough for a norm.

It's only unfair if you are bothered by numbers on Chess-Results.

Onwards and upwards. Today, Keith starts play in the World Senior Team Championships, also in Rhodes.

I have started a new thread at viewtopic.php?f=47&t=10193.
