Really? The current entry list has one player rated just over 2600, 10 between 2500 and 2600, and the median rating is about 2100. That looks like a pretty average strength open to me.

Thank for that Ian. I am sure you will wish me well in this event as I fly the flag for England.

I have not been able to study for it as much as I had liked due to organising all of the infrastructure for Great Britain Junior Squad, developing website, 2 shops and the Social Media Strategy. I have all of that in position now and now have staff and partners so can settle into strategic direction and organising the World Tour. Have you come up with a way how you could assist us - Perhaps on a volountary basis, do you have a useful skillset?

I will always want my fellow countryman to do well in any tournament abroad

What point Ian was making was the blatant over exaggeration saying it was one of the strongest opens in Europe (I have checked the entry list) this to me looks a pretty standard tournament in strength, the stronger events are Gibraltar, Reykjavik and Xtracon to name a few

If you make basic incorrect statements like this, then who can believe any other statement you make

Hi Alan,
If you are going to make a statement like that please compile all European Open Events National And International Opens and when you see I am correct that it is I will welcome your apology otherwise you will have to join my collection of 'pointless to respond to because its just wasting my time' collection. I had thought better of you.

Anyone challenging anything I say, just assume I am right, which I have done persistently in this thread, until you have done enormous research, then get your opinion then delve deeper and then you will be correct with your opinion.

In other words you will validate what I have said.

Lets say if we compiled all Opens this would be better than at least 90 percent of the others --- this should help those of a pedantic nature.

"One of the strongest Opens in Europe" is a hard claim to refute. It could mean one of the 500 strongest Opens in Europe.

Thank you Nick,

Sometimes seems like a game of Space Invaders when people come on constantly challenging and wanting explanations.

Nice to have a little light in the darkness.

Anyone who wants to come to Mallorca for some Beer Blitz and fun, most welcome....starts tomorrow.

OK, I am going to bite; here are my last 10 tournaments ("opens") which I play abroad data is as follows : tournament, top 10 avg, top 20 avg, starting rank of 2228 rated player (your current rating)

Llucmajor 2019 / 2562 / 2513 / 44th
Reykjavik 2019 / 2646 / 2613 / 70th
Gibraltar 2018 / 2750 / 2718 / 190th
Reykjavik 2017 / 2693 / 2641 / 88th
Xtracon 2016 / 2654 / 2609 / 76th
Gibraltar 2016 / 2749 / 2716 / 167th
Politiken 2015 / 2653 / 2603 / 79th
IOM 2015 / 2690 / 2647 / 83rd
Gibraltar 2015 / 2732 / 2696 / 144th
IOM 2014 / 2687 / 2617 / 60th
Gibraltar 2014 / 2725 / 2699 / 142nd

And finally here was one I was considering to enter

Corsica 2019 / 2600 / 2550 / 43rd (but this is a restricted event to 1900+)

I didn't say it wasn't a weak event just saying it isn't one of the strongest Opens in Europe, just a good event

Well lets say there are 100 Opens in UK this year.

Please tell me how many as a percentage will be 'higher' than this Mallorca event? Let me tell you less than 10 per cent.

You will notice that I put in a healthy margin by claiming top 10 per cent to support my claims because I like to be correct, if you want to do clinical research you will find that it is most likely better than the top 95 per cent. As I have to deal with a lot of pedantic trolls on the Internet my general policy is to make sure that I at least cover what I say...hence my statement of winning 168 Opens, I always new it was more than that but getting evidenced from 1989 to 1998 is quite difficult without a reseach assistant.

As I am a very busy person, exact research is not always efficient but my vast knowledge of all things Chess enables me to see in a second what most would conlude in a months study / research. To help you out, I suggest to take care of the Plank in your own eye then you will be able to see clearly to to move the speck in mine, this is a good general approach that I use before criticising anyone, unless of course you goad me into defending myself when I am happy to give you a social media slap to the same level that was your intention when you placed the words on this screen for all to see.

As part of my role when working as a Computer Science Teacher I teach students how to deal with people that have malicious Internet intent, the best way is to ignore them as much as possible and that's a policy I also like to keep, although, I also believe everyone deserves a second chance - not a third.
My suggestion is if you want to advertise your own services, simply set up a thread here in the Adverts section.

The purpose of this thread is to show you that Parents and kids have a new choice in how they want to participate in International Chess, Our formulae is simple;

1. Qualify every 6 months for your official pecking order.

2. Contact us within 2 weeks of your qualification to claim your eligible position- some financial support may be available.
3. We tell you our official Hotel where Coaches will stay, you choose this and book it yourself in advance, along with flights to massively reduce cost
4. We encourage you to buy our Official Hoodies and Caps

5. Becoming a Branded County Manager enables you to run your own County Chess enterprise, get access to Partner Branding, Support, resources and training rather than the current offerings which makes you work for someone else.

Seems likea Win Win for Great Britains Chess and their Juniors.....Who would like to help because I can only do so much on my own and I want this to be our greatest Junior Chess Organisation... ever...thats the goal but it takes a team and key supporters, I know there are intelligent people out there reading this that can make or break this and that with their support and guidance they can see this idea of becoming an incredible force for good in an area which needs Crystal Transparency, so don't be put off by a few trolls- if you think its right you do something about it from tiny droplets come huge Waterfalls and you will have your desire and vision implemented on any support we agree on.

Don't start changing your criteria by just comparing with UK events, you did say Europe

What generally has happened in this thread is that you make a claim, when someone asks for evidence you just say it is up to the challenger to justify you are incorrect.

I have provided a list of stronger events (not full evidence but a decent sample), they are historical but they continue today are are still the strongest in Europe

Now I have spent a little time doing some collection of data; can you provide some of your own impirical evidence backing your claim?

Anyway all the best in the tournament, hoping for a good result and will be keeping an eye on it

Are you including rapidplays and Blitz in that?

It wasn't your original claim that Mallorca was a stronger event than those in Britain, rather you were comparing to Europe as a whole. Given that there's invariably an Under 160/170/180 as a second section in the UK, anyone entering a British Open event is likely to face a stronger field even if they do badly than if they do badly in the Mallorca event, which goes all the way down to the foot of the rating list at 1000 and below.

If you are somewhere in the middle of a large event of mixed strength, the pairings are apt to give you a bouncing effect. One round you get an IM, next a 1700 player.

The strongest opens are those that will exclude players who don't have ratings high enough. Under the auspices of the ECF, that's only been Gibraltar and Isle of Man with the British Championship having some aspects of that.

Just been thinking about this another way using the "10% rule"; lets take 100 opens as my sample size, why this size because most opens last on average 10 days (includes travel days each side) you theoretically only could play around 30 in a calendar year

So can I name 10 open tournaments this year stronger than Llucmajor, these aren't in strength order

1) Gibraltar (technically open to all entries, though space limitation causes difficulty to enter)
2) Reykjavik
3) Xtracon
4) European Individual Champs (anybody can enter)
5) Corsica (over 1900)
6) Rilton Cup Stockholm
7) Riga
8 ) Vienna
9) London Classic Open
10) IOM (though this year may be in a different format due to the candidates), so possible the Sants open in Barcelona

open tournaments this year stronger than Llucmajor,
Grenke, Moscow Aeroflot

If any English player performs decently in Llucmajor it will most likely be the No8 seed,,,
