Martin

as Angus French says Palliser v Arkell is indeed covered up-thread on page 14. But as you may not have time to read everything, the answer to your specific question is yes Keith Arkell was unwell.

In Lane - Brewer, why did Gary Lane offer a draw? Looks overwhelmingly good for White to my eyes after the simple to find 35 Ng6+ Kf8 36 Ne5. Mark you, it looked awful for White a few moves earlier, so maybe he was so relieved to have escaped that he offered a draw without taking a fresh look at the position.
Its a pretty messy position, all well and good for those at home looking at it with an engine telling them it is a "win" but over the board you see a lot of phantoms. I would probably nick a cheap draw against an IM too - they are pretty notorious swindlers!
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

Palliser has a game today! Mickey's bodyguards must have done their job...

I agree that in a game all sorts of things frighten one, but in this case, the IM (Gary Lane) has taken a draw against a much lower rated non-titled opponent (a very good player, of course), not the other way round. I was not looking at this with an engine, and it's a two move sequence. Mistakes and misjudgements happen, but for the reasons just mentioned, I was surprised that it happened in this particular case.

Houska seems to have run out of preparation a bit earlier than she might have liked

Katarzyna Toma vs Keith Arkell could be considered an all-Worcestershire game, since both players have recently represented that county. I can't remember the last time that happened in the British Championships proper. I'm thinking it was probably when Simon Small was an active professional (more than likely against Keith too)?

Well, it looks like Keith is in big trouble.

Yes, it does!

In fact, the two played in last year's Championships, although I don't think Katarzyna had represented Worcestershire at the time of that game.

Mickey lives to tell the tale of how he beat Richard Palliser, whose 25th seems to have been on the suboptimal side.

He was in the same team as Syd Little and Eddie Large.

my memory might be deceiving me, but I wonder whether Small and Arkell played in the British in the early to mid 1980s, Small winning with f6-f7 discovered check?

recovery for Williams today and a bad day at the office for Ravi - I guess that might open up the U21 title race.

Looks like the sort of game I'd lose to the Colle when I was about fifteen.
