You should go for gold and go FIDE next year!

It would certainly be interesting to discover how many entries would be lost through reluctance to pay the ECF surcharge. However, I can understand that organisers may not be keen to take part in this experiment.

Given the number that have FIDE IDs in the Major (the Open entry list appears not to be up-to-date), I suspect not many. They might be lost for other reasons, mind.

All but 1 of the players in the Open have FIDE IDs

That's mint imperial though, as it is what the organisers think of FIDE rating that matters

The three biggest weekend congresses in the North. (Some would argue in England)

Blackpool
Scarborough
Manchester

Are not FIDE rated. I run Manchester. It is not FIDE rated because I am convinced that FIDE rating tournaments reduces entries.

I also help to run a FIDE rated congress. Bolton Easter. A similar event run by the same team with the same high standards which struggles to reach half the entry of the Manchester event. This reinforces my opinion that FIDE rating reduces entries

Harry Lamb. Congress Director. Manchester Chess Federation
