Happened to see a bit of that, have to say the actual chess "footage" was more convincing than is sometimes the case in these things.

Just seen a particularly overblown chess metaphor in a report on Sunday's Arsenal - Spurs match, by Barney Ronay in the Irish Times. (It credits the piece to the Guardian, but I can't find it on their website.)

David Luiz was ... a man playing a game of slapstick defensive chess three moves ahead and on a different board.

I'm sure we've all done that ...

Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood: Brad Pitt goes back to his caravan and on the TV there's a trailer for the film Three In The Attic, with a chess scene showing.

(Later, Leonardi Di Caprio is in his trailer and you can see a chessboard in a pocket on the wall.)

In his own pieces, "our" Colin Crouch pointed out that he was Colin S Crouch, not Colin R Crouch, who is the person referenced in the Guardian article.

'Bletchley Park Brainteaser' by Sinclair McKay,

Has an interesting chapter on Chess mentioning Alexander and his wins over Bronstein and Tolush at Hastings 1953/54
and the fact even then his war time activities had to remain a secret. Milner-Barry and Golombek also mentioned.
Ends with five Chess related puzzles. (not your mate in x moves variety.)

Got the bottom one very quickly: Queen - Victoria - Plum. Some of the others took longer and one or two (three or four) not at all.

Hi,

The book answer is 'Pawn-Shop-Keeper' but if an answer makes sense then I'm sure that that is OK.

Found something very strange. One of the puzzles in the book is this.

In the book there is no Black King on a8. I have to place one here to display the fen position.

So with just the White pieces you have to figure out three names. (I was off on the wrong track, even
though, and here is a clue I never got. I got Victoria Plum practically right away in the other puzzle.)

But forget about the puzzle. It's the position of the White pieces. King e1,Queen e2, Bishop e6 and Knight e8.

Just our of curiosity I wondered if this WHite set up had appeared in Red Hot Pawn.

Yes! Seven times! All seven between the same two players! all from a different order of moves! here are three of them.

The seven games were played in 2014 three years before the Bletchley Park book was published.

The players seem to be deliberately heading for this set up in all 7 games. Very strange...cue Twilight Zone theme.
