Chance for Adams, missed, so now heading for the second 10+10

Armageddon it is. Impressive blitz play from both at the end of the second 10 -10 game, clearly the favourable SF assessment was never going to be proven under such conditions.

Are we not on 5+3?

I don't think so, but now you make me wonder. If it is armageddon, not ideal to play White given the pattern of play so far.

Re: World Cup Knockout 2019
Incidentally Adams used to be a plausible (pre-event) winner of every world class KO competition between 1991 and 2004 (Tripoli). But has anything much gone right for him since Tripoli? I don't remember him getting especially so far ever since; perhaps one last 16 appearance in 2009 or so when he lost a close match to Carlsen. A pity. You'd still back him in any British Championship play-off, after all.

Did he give an interview a while back where he said that the World Cup was no longer a major focus? He would continue to play in it for as long as he received automatic invitations, but wasn't going to do much dedicated preparation for it.Jonathan Rogers wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2019 5:06 pmBut has anything much gone right for him since Tripoli? Kasimdzhanov hasn't prospered as much as might have been expected of a World Champion. Perhaps some curse attached to that benighted event.Jonathan Rogers wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2019 5:06 pmBut has anything much gone right for him since Tripoli?

The same can be argued wrt Ponomariov (though he has also been bringing up a family)

Ponomariov's main problem has been an atrocious manager.Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2019 6:11 pmThe same can be argued wrt Ponomariov (though he has also been bringing up a family)

Ponomariov's main problem in this particular tournament was that he was the number 46 seed. So he was doomed before he'd even started.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2019 6:27 pmPonomariov's main problem has been an atrocious manager.Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2019 6:11 pmThe same can be argued wrt Ponomariov (though he has also been bringing up a family)

Dubov - Firouzja move 16, if you saw that position in class you'd offer some words of encouragement, but think that chess probably wasn't their thing
