"Nigel Mansell"
Yes, he was mentioned as well. I doubt he would fly in from IoM, or our own Nigel would dash in from Greece!

One of the songs is about a child's love of chess and later in the play how his attitude matures as he gets older.

Titania McGrath on Twitter:
Thank you @Hasbro for MS MONOPOLY. Woman need this kind of head start in order to help them to feel empowered.
Now we just need MS CHESS, where the Queen lounges about at the back of the board while the King runs around doing all the hard work for a change.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

From the September issue of Literary Review: "Dealing with German intelligence was 'like playing chess with someone not quite so good as oneself; with the Japanese, it was like setting up the chessboard against an adversary whose one idea was to punch you on the nose'."

Re: Media comments on chess
I was flicking through BBC1 just now, preparing to turn my TV off. I came across an episode of 'New Tricks' which was already partway over. It was a rerun of an episode called, 'The English Defence'.
The detectives talked about 66 consecutive wins in a one on one match and that must surely be a record. Well, yes. One or both of the plaers would get bored.
Then Denns Waterman spoke about White opening with the Budapest. That would be a clever trick, it being 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e5.
There is a chess club in an educational establishment where you see a demonstration board of a design new to me.
The baddie is captured towards the end with his head held close to a board. Dennis picks up a piece, slams it on the board and says, 'Checkmate!'
The episode concludes with a chess game where Dennis falls for Scholar's Mate against another of the detectives.
By the way, I am fairly sure the culprit was supposed to be a strong chessplayer. That is normal, althugh it doesn't invariably apply.

Yes, I expect many remember the Conan Doyle/Sherlock Holmes villain for whom the quotation goes something like 'Amberley excelled at chess, Watson, one mark of the scheming mind,'Stewart Reuben wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2019 1:05 am

Edited as I couldn't bear the disgrace of omitting the l from Holmes.

Is the cartoon dated? I can't make it out from that image.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Hi Justin
It's No.9 Oct 2019.
I bought it today at the Post Office sending off all my weekend E-Bay sales.
The queue was quite long so I grabbed the mag to browse whilst waiting....end up buying it (£3.25)
This next pic was sent to me today my one of my world wide spies.
I have 100's of them all over the planet looking for anything chess connected.
A bus named after Bobby Fischer.

Hi Justin,
No date on cartoon. Caption in black reads: The Joke and Dagger Dept.
Morse code on bottom of cartoon says B.C. P.R.O.H.M.A.T. Artist is Peter Kuper...it's on page 8.

Ah, that's a shame. I'm assuming it's actually an old cartoon.
