I was Captain of Chess for my last three years at school. It was good training for what awaited me later in life.

I have no idea what this means. Is it different from being captain of the chess (or, say, cricket) team?Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2019 11:51 pmHas the concept of "Captain of Chess" alongside "Captain of Tennis", "Captain of Cricket", "Captain of Rugby" etc now disappeared from the school system?

Well, any cricket team has to have a captain, whether or not the "captain of cricket" happens to be playing on that team.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2019 9:11 amI have no idea what this means. Is it different from being captain of the chess (or, say, cricket) team?

I've just noticed that two of the last four posters here were among my five opponents in the New Malden 1975 tournament. 44 years on and we're all still here. I guess this says a lot for the power of chess.

Nor I, to the best of my recollection (although my first adult tournament was in 1968).

Re: Malcolm Barker.
Justin and David are both correct: I've never played either of them.
I drew with Kevin and won (undeservedly, from a lost position) against Nick.

I had completely forgotten that, but am not at all surprised. Some things never change, well played anyway.Richard James wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2019 6:03 pmand won (undeservedly, from a lost position) against Nick.

Re: Malcolm Barker.
Such a youngster! My first tournament was a 'Christmas Special' section at Hastings 1961-62, a small all-play-all which included Eileen Tranmer. Aged 15 and having been at boarding school since the age of 7 I wasn't due to join an adult club till I was 19. My highlight of the Congress was an awe-inspiring moment when I coincidentally visited the gents urinals alongside Mikhail Botvinnik who was playing in the Premier. Those foreign GMs were even more godlike in those days before computers and English GMs.Neil Blackburn wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2019 5:24 pm

Re: Malcolm Barker.
I think you mean a slightly differently spelled player, Damjanovic?
(he was also Croatian, whereas the similarly named but younger man you cite is a Serb)
