I imagine there will be thousands of rugby and chess fans unsure what to do and then realising they can probably watch the rugby with a time delay.

Won't the rugby be over by the time the chess starts?

They start at the same time presumably. But yes it’s a real dilemma, stuck here with my brand new black and white tv, and the radio batteries run out.

Ah, I see now. I was relying on Chessbomb's tournament information - really should know better by now - but it's actually one of those dreaded early starts.

I understand the reticence to comment until the fifth hour of play. But it is looking very good.

It really does. Very solid from Mickey, and Gawain seems to have spotted a trick, negating some of the technicalities of the endgame!

This is where we were against Ukraine. Couldn't happen twice!

Luke has drawn so 2-1 up with board three still in play.

I'd recommend a look at Dubov - Svane in the top match

Great result :D

I assume Russia - Germany will be drawn, so we'd have

Russia (12) v England (11)
Germany (11) v Ukraine (11)

Given the match position, was there no way for Sargissian to play on? The other way round, I bet that Luke would have done.

I suspect that stronger players than me would say that the position is equal, but not drawn. I've certainly seen him grind out wins albeit possibly not against anyone as strong as Luke. Maybe he made the mistake of starting to try and work out what was going on in David's game and then had no energy left for his own game :)

Germany will reckon they might have done better, what with this (very wacky and exciting) game

"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
