In an idle-curiosity kind of way.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Re: End of an era
There's a bit more than that of course: given that it's an official (i.e. employer-linked) rather than personal account, you'd want to know why it was always being used to promote friends and cronies. But the same would be true of the column itself, and the paper was never going to answer any questions about either.
Still, one wonders what happens next month.

OK, can anybody share news of what Ray has for us today?

One place that isn't sharing this, intriguingly, is....Ray's Twitter account, although it does find time to retweet Simpson's-in-the-Strand. As far as I can see it hasn't tweeted news of a column since October 29.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2019 11:44 amOK, can anybody share news of what Ray has for us today?

Whilst on the subject of Simpson's-in-the-Strand I thought I would remind this place of the edit to the plaque of the famous chess board on the wall of the entrance way :
If only the final word "and" was missing the edit would almost be convincing.

Re: End of an era
Today is Staunton-Horowitz 1851 (the double fianchetto Dutch with a nice attack). The Times is at work and my books at home, so I can't tell you how closely the notes match MGP1 or Flank Openings...
The ending to the Immortal Game is the puzzle.
This sort of column doesn't bother me in itself if it is recycled rather than copied.

Yes, that one.
The paper note to move 27 is "The introduction of the decisive attack. The first link in the chain is the restriction of Black's defensive knight on g7" compared to "The prelude to the decisive attack, in which Staunton’s pieces stream across to menace the black king. Firstly, Staunton restricts the possibilities of Black’s defensive knight on g7." for example.
But then again, what do you say differently about a game where there is nothing new to say?

I'm guessing you could pick another game, for instance.Paul Cooksey wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2019 12:52 pmBut then again, what do you say differently about a game where there is nothing new to say?
Oh, I note this.
I think the answer to this, always, is - cool, but if the writer thinks it's no problem, let us know.Paul Cooksey wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2019 12:37 pmThis sort of column doesn't bother me in itself if it is recycled rather than copied.

Morphy. The finishes of those games v Duke of Brunswick and Paulsen, which we have all seen many times. The Winning Move is a well-known combination starting Qxd7+.

Ray yesterday.
Ray today. The notes are here, for instance, and on pages 78-80 in Becoming A Grandmaster, which may not be the original source.

I did wonder whether they featured in "Flank Openings". But no, the line quoted for Qe1 against .. Bf5 is important theory, but it's Drimer v Whiteley rather than Keene v Whiteley.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Sat Nov 16, 2019 8:11 amThe notes are here, for instance, and on pages 78-80 in Becoming A Grandmaster, which may not be the original source.
