Malta International Open

Post by Keith Arkell » Tue Nov 19, 2019 12:11 am

At Malta today I played quite an interesting combination:

From the diagrammed position I played 32 h6+ Kh6 33 d5! Rxd5 34 Nf6 Kg7 35 Rh1! h6 36 Rxh6! Qd8 37 Rh7+ Kf8 38 Rh8+ Kg7 39 Rg8+ Kh6 40 Qc1! and he resigned as it is forced mate.

Adding to Roger's POS tags, the game line can be played through below using the PGN tags.

Maybe someone can add variations where the 'sacrificed' pieces are taken? (e.g. 34...Rxd2 - oh, I see a knight check on g8!).

[PS. Instructions on PGN and POS tags are here.]

Thanks guys for the diags and stuff. And thank goodness for the forum, as the ECF don't seem to report the results of events like Malta and Cyprus on their site ( or at least I can't find where, but my sincerest apologies to them if I'm just not looking in the right places ).

Anyway, just as with Cyprus, I finished with 7/9. I drew with Black on board 2 in the last (yukky early morning) round with Black v v Russian GM Naumkin to probably finish 3rd or 4th ( in a field of 235!).

I believe 3Cs' Adam Ashton finished on 7/9 as well. Anyone know if that got him anywhere near an IM norm?

It didn't. His first five opponents were all untitled.

They aren't using the chess-results site, so no rating performances are quoted.

Looking down the list of finishers, there are several British players or those playing in the UK.

Apologies if I missed anyone.

Tarun is our latest FM - just turned 15. Trisha missed out on her last WIM norm by virtue of not playing enough titled players - 4 rather than 5.

I have quickly calculated the British based players rating changes, and those for the three John mentioned

These are just the scores against rated players (unrated players excluded)

Well done Keith, hope you enjoyed it

I don't think the ECF website would carry anything unless someone sent them a report, however brief, in which case they almost certainly would add it; perhaps you should email them, or at least get it into the Newsletter

I did thanks, Mick. Was well looked after :-)

I was wandering whether the Federation had anything like a publicity officer who has a look around the internet for the results of English players abroad. If not I'm happy to continue supplying the basic results of my travels on here.

I was about to mention that the young English lad Sohum Lohia performed well above his seeding and rating with his score of 5, but I see Alan Walton has added him.

To give credit where it's due, the Federation's level of reporting on Twitter is fantastic.
