Re: End of an era
You've just made me grovel into my recycling bin with a torch to check on the 'Times 2' games which have replaced the Monday through Friday chess column. Slight correction: just one 'weirdly named game', Tetonor, which appeared on Tuesday and again on Thursday. Too much to explain, but there are 16 numbers of 2 or 3 digits in a 4x4 grid. Below is a 16-cell strip with a number in just six of the cells. The instructions begin: When complete, the strip below the grid can be split into eight pairs of numbers. Adding the numbers in a pair gives one of the 16 numbers in the grid...etc You get the flavour?Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 10:11 pm"couple of weirdly named new puzzle games"

So it seems as though the Mon.-Fri. pattern of new items will be General Knowledge Crossword, Tetonor, Poker, Tetonor, Backgammon.

You can play this on your phone or tablet as well, which much be pretty frustrating if you get puzzles like this one, where there's no solution.Paul Habershon wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 12:20 amjust one 'weirdly named game', Tetonor, which appeared on Tuesday and again on Thursday. Thanks Paul - that's a new one on me! I can just about handle the sudoku variants and kakuro, but that is certainly weird...

To be honest, having laboured through that one ( and confirmed your conclusion, not that I doubted it ) I feel that I never need to do another.Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 11:27 amwhich much be pretty frustrating if you get puzzles like this one, where there's no solution.

You can do Chess Sojoku (sic)
http://www.sujoku.com/themes/chess/
Use logic to fill in the puzzle so that each of the 9 Chess Symbols
appears exactly once in each row, column and 3x3 block. There is only one solution.
the solution is here; http://www.sujoku.com/data/17437-solution.pdf

Raymondo was a very good writer back in the day. Sadly in later years it seemed he was rather going through the motions and any kind of plagiarism is of course not good.
Nevertheless I wonder if the obsession with him from some quarters is or was partly motivated by the cushy job he had at the times- that perhaps others coveted?

I honestly don't think that that was the motivation of any contributor to this Forum.Daniel Gormally wrote: ↑Thu Dec 19, 2019 1:12 pmNevertheless I wonder if the obsession with him from some quarters is or was partly motivated by the cushy job he had at the times- that perhaps others coveted?

"Obsession" is, of course, a silly word, which says more about anybody who uses it than it does about anyone about whom it is used.

I have no idea if either McShane or Howell "coveted" RDK's journalistic positions - and as long as they do a better job I don't really care either.

Why is it a silly word? It's a word like any other. Neither good nor bad.
I wasn't referring to messrs Howell and McShane of course who are strong players and probably deserve a column these days more than Raymondo does.
I was referring to people on this forum and elsewhere who should find better things to do than pick on a jaded writer.
