Just taken the opportunity to hear the Josie Long programme - intelligent, gentle, effervescent - if she really is as enthusiastic as she sounds, then hope she gets more involved with a higher profile.

She made the first move for Adams at the recent London tournament - unfortunately d4, not the move he wanted to play - but must be good for publicity

Every Christmas, Private Eye publishes a double-page of spoof adverts for things you never knew you needed. Some of them are actually better than the things you see in magazines in the run up to Christmas... (For example, this time they have a "trollinav", which consults your shopping list and leads you to the right places in the supermarket!)

However, back on track, we have "The Multifaith Chess Set", which comes with all the standard pieces, except it has one Bishop, one Iman, one Rabbi and one Richard Dawkins. "Now you can be a truly diverse woke grandmaster of the ancient game!"

She reminds me of a chess game with someone I admire
Or a picnic in the rain after a prairie fire

The London Review Of Books normally operates a paywall but its entire archive is open to everyone until 15 January. This includes (among many, many other things) Oliver Sacks' famous piece The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat, which I hadn't realised, or hadn't remembered, possesses a reference to chess, and blindfold chess at that.
It was entirely in keeping with his condition that he could remember the plot of a novel and things that the characters said, but had no sense of their physiognomy; that he could remember what happened to them but not the scenes in which they took part. What surprised me was that when I engaged him in a game of mental chess he had no difficulty in visualising the chessboard – indeed, had no difficulty in beating me.

Advert spotted on a London bus (but unable to find online) for a group of educational establishments known as London South East Colleges. It featured a row of black chess pawns, with a pink one offset from the row, with the tagline "Stand Out". Other objects used in this advertising campaign (with a sometimes pink one standing out) include balloons, chairs, lollipops, toy aliens, Star Wars stormtroopers, coffee cups, snowmen, fairy lights, light bulbs, rubber ducks. Chess pawns being just another variant on the theme.

"A bit of chess being played here" alleges our TalkSport commentator (don't know who) with regard to field changes in the Test Match.

In the NFL playoffs, Tennessee played New England in the first AFC Wildcard game yesterday.

An interesting situation arose where Tennessee were 14-13 ahead, and had 4th & 4 at the Patriots 36 with 6 minutes to play. Maybe too far away for a Field Goal, quite close for a Punt, but perhaps within range of going for it.

Instead of all those options, Tennessee bravely ... took a Delay of Game penalty. This keeps the clock running for another 25 seconds, and moved the ball back to 4th & 9 on the Patriots 41. They followed this up by taking a False Start penalty, which made it 4th & 14 on the Patriots 46. This reset the clock to another 25 second play clock, with the game clock continuing to run. At this point, the Patriots suddenly committed their own penalty, a Neutral Zone Infraction, bringing it back to 4th & 9 on the Patriots 41. Once again, the 25 second play clock was reset and the game clock continued to run...

Eventually this charade ended when the game clock went below 5 minutes, at which point by rule the game clock doesn't run anymore after a penalty. Finally, Tennessee punted.

New England's Head Coach, Bill Belichick, thought this was hilarious when he did it and was 33-0 up in a blowout against the New York Jets earlier in the year, but lip readers detected that his opinion on the matter differed when faced with this situation last night when trailing by 1 point.

During this process, Tony Romo on commentary described this as a "chess game between these two", referring to the two coaches when they appeared on screen.

This happened a few times this season now, and I would guess the Secretary of the NFL Rules Committee had added a new agenda item for their next meeting.

CJ Sansom Tombland - two of the gentleman prisoners in Norwich Castle amuse themselves by playing chess.

William Boyd: Sweet Caress ' after his lobotomy...lost all interest in his old profession...his entire intellectual life it seemed was concentrated around the business of two-move chess problems - composing, plotting, testing and them sending them in to newspapers and chess magazines.'

Much less decent - in the sense of clearly written by a non-player - piece on the record being passed
