Do we have any alcohol tolerance in Chess? Need to be.
The only tournament I know of that tests players for alcohol levels is the Crypt Blitz which penalizes players for being sober.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Roger must be wishing Open tournaments were only 8 rounds  Unfortunately I expect he will bounce back in his club match tomorrow :(

Hard luck Richard.

Roger had the distinction of having no draws, so I applaud his fighting spirit (although I imagine he wasn't happy with the losses!)

The answer is that yes, he was, because it's the arbiter's duty to seek medical attention if the player turns out to be seriously ill.
There was a case in India ten years ago.

According to witnesses, the sleeping player was emotional as well as tired.

Anyone know what happened on board 45, Zheng - Patrick ?

Black's position is a bit nasty but that is to be expected after 4...Lc5 I suppose.
Something went wrong with the transmission. White won, but in considerably more than 8 moves.
That's not what happened. Patrick's mobile went off [snip]. Alex McF then approached the table to tell Patrick he had lost. Patrick who is Swedish
I assume this is Chaski (who lived on Mull about 20 odd years ago)?

Being 'drunk' is a subjective description. It is the behaviour of the player which is the issue, and this is already covered in the laws.

As alcohol has a negative effect on performance, I am usually quite happy if my opponent is drinking (though not to the extent of offering to top up their glass!)

It was won by Masters winner Magesh Chandran Panchanathan for his game in Round 8 against Deep Sengupta.

Thanks - a worthy winner. He played the tournament of his life. He was way ahead on time and in complete control every time i looked at his games.

One of my favourite games at Hastings is from 2004.
White Peter Nielsen
Black Vassilios Kotronias
King's Indian Defence
A classic, white attack down the queenside and black attack on the kingside.
Vassilios won, Raymond Keene did a wonderful write up in The Times about it along with a win by Jonathan Rowson as black against Mark Hebden in the same article.
