Inside The Games, reporting on Ju v Goryachkina, gives us some game/match confusion and an unfortunate misuse of "stalemate".
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I've seen quite a few references to the new Barcelona manager, who has a FIDE rating of 2055; the BBC website said he had played both Karpov & Kasparov
Any postings on here represent my personal views

Radio4 'Woman's Hour' has just interviewed the Iranian female arbiter criticised in Iran for not wearing a hijab at the Women's World Champ'. Starts at about 10:04 and lasts 7 or 8 minutes in all

All quite respectable.

Defending the "mock-Spanish" can be difficult.

The above game is already linked to in this afternoon's Guardian article, with further comments:

A record of a different kind was created this week when Quique Setién became the new Barcelona manager. The 61-year-old has played chess at a sufficiently high level, although more than 20 years ago, to have an official Fide international rating of 2055, expert standard.

His game in a 2002 simultaneous display by the then world champion Vlad Kramnik has been preserved and shows that Setién knew theory well and kept the Russian legend at bay until he was eventually overrun by a crushing attack.

Setién very likely ranks as the all-time chess No 1 among football managers, with his only rival Ossie Ardiles of Tottenham and Argentina. The competition is much stronger among professional GMs and IM players, where Carlsen’s former coach Simen Agdestein, Bela Soos of Romania, and Vlastimil Jansa of the former Czechoslovakia all played soccer internationally.

In 1992 when Agdestein competed at Hastings after drawing a match 2-2 against Anatoly Karpov, he stated in an interview with the Guardian that he had found it harder to play against the ex-world champion than against the legendary Italian defender Franco Baresi, who had been Agdestein’s direct opponent on his international debut.

The complete article, which also comments on Carlsen's unbeaten streak:https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/ ... threatened

Apparently Isabel dos Santos' mother, Tatjana Kukanova, was a chess champion. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... man-angola. Whether that was in Russia, where she was born, or in Azerbaijan, where she met her future husband and the father of Isabel, José Eduardo dos Santos, is not clear.

Anyone ever heard of Kukanova?

If you search her blog for the word chess, there's a reference in one of the entries, but I can't get it to show me.

From her blog:
Tatiana Kukanova, after leaving her life beside his ex-husband, won a chess championship

Are you able to link to a given entry that says that? I got as far as that with the search function, but I couldn't see if there was (or was not) any more information.

In case you missed it - Channel 4's "The Great Pottery Throw Down" - this week's challenge was to make a chess set. Very interesting designs.

Watched this tonight. Yes - really interesting designs. References to castles and horses raised my ire, and someone said he would make his pawns "prawns" - AAAARGH!, but he did a really good job.

Elsewhere, Paul Robinson was playing black against his wife Therese on Neighbours. She played 2.Bg5, "Aha", said Paul, "The Trompowsky Attack", (although he pronounced the "ow" as "ow", not "ov"), someone else said, "That's not even a thing!"
