I'm not sure there's a substantial difference although there's certainly a difference both in the magnitude of the sums involved and the fact that one has been through a judicial process, where all the relevant facts were [presumably] divulged, and the other is the subject only of a local newspaper story. I alluded earlier to the possibility that, in the latter case, the business had been struggling for years in which event it would likely be more an issue of financial incompetence than criminal intent. If that is the case, and I've no inside knowledge, then putting the matter in the public domain would seem to me comparable to advertising County Court judgements against chess players.

But I'm vaguely uncomfortable over when it's appropriate to use this forum to highlight someone's less-than-desirable but non-chess activity.

I agree, particularly when those who lost wages in 2011/2012 would have been able to claim back the sums lost from the insolvency service - up to the current limit of £525 if there employer had followed formal insolvency procedures. Justin - you may like to point your friends friend in that direction.

yes quite chatty but I see once again, yet again, Carlsen is 'The Mozart of Chess'
(I suppose now he has given up drinking we cannot call him Brahms or Liszt)
but in reality he should Mozart the 7th because 6 players before him have been likened to Mozart.

Morphy, Lasker, Tal, Spassky, Fischer and Karpov.
I'm sure some entrepid researcher will be able to discover a Capablanca/Mozart mention out there somewhere.)

A pedant writes: copyright over a text is established in the act of publication, and would extend to the concept expressed in the text, provided that a court held that the concept was one that was subject to copyright, which I very much doubt they would in this case. (Not that I'm an authority in this area. Interesting fact: somebody who is, albeit he's now retired, is Charles Oppenheim, who's a chess player.)

Harold Schonberg's book on chess history IIRC included the phrase "if Capablanca was the Mozart of chess, Alekhine was the Wagner".

Edward Winter actually mentions this:

"Schonberg referred to Capablanca as ‘the Mozart of chess’ on page 181 of Grandmasters of Chess (Philadelphia and New York, 1973)
as it was not bulleted I was not counting it. OK Magnus is Mozart VIII.

Recently looking though the November 1975 CHESS (page 61) Tal was mentioned in the same sentence as:
Vladimir Horowitz, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, Liszt and Rachmaninoff.
