Ah, oops. Also missed the thread on plagiarism. Has the Penguin been to his tricks again?David Sedgwick wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 3:07 pmAs already mentioned by John Swain upthread.
Minor plagiarism is currently being discussed in another thread. Perhaps we should also consider inadvertent cases.

Nah - you're muddling the Bird thread with the Plagiarism thread.

I'd quite like a rule change allowing me to refuse a resignation in circumstances where my opponent has played on for an hour a rook down with no compensation. But I can see some practical difficulties.Martyn Harris wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 10:43 amAt chess on the other hand I'm a late resigner, and equally have no objections if my opponent wants to play to mate on those only too rare occasions that I'm on top.

Re: Announcing mate
I'm pretty sure I can remember a tournament report in a magazine only a few years ago which included one player announcing mate and the player at the next board (these were professionals, not club players) telling them to just play it out.
In general, I think I personally would be petrified of getting it wrong, but I guess that's a lack of confidence some other people don't have, and they're probably all the better for it.

And I am amazed that you should not think that comment too petty to make.

Perhaps your last 7195 posts on the Forum (or, at least, a great many of them) are the reason! Don't get me wrong - you have a great deal of useful stuff to say and I read most of it with interest but your response to my attempt to be amusing just shows what a great opinion you have of yourself.

I don't really understand your response but it hardly matters. There is nothing to be gained by arguing at this difficult time. I shall continue to read your stuff with interest as I said before.

My clubmate John Seppings recently informed me that he had announced mate in a Bradford League game, All I could think of as a reply was, 'Ooh, that's a bit nineteenth century!'.

A few years ago, in a Rapidplay Tourmament at the London Classic, I moved, pressed the clock, said "mate", and extended my hand. My opponent ignored me and made a legal move.Richard Thursby wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 9:18 pmHis opponent called the arbiter over and was awarded the game, possibly because stopping the clock was effectively resigning.
Not bad for a Category A International Arbiter.
At least I didn't stop the clock!
