I assume you mean in terms of your ECF grade. The games played before the person has died are submitted for ECF grading in the normal way. The person will then become an ungraded player.
If this is because of an ongoing situation I will just add hope everything is alright as well.

They'll actually retain their grade until it expires, just like anyone else. If the ECF knows they've died, they'll have "(deceased)" appended to their name.

Quite a lot. It will be difficult to enter tournaments, that's for sure.

You can still join some committees though.

If you had a FIDE Rating, your name and last rating continues to appear in the FIDE Rating List until removed.

… which will happen as soon as your Federation notifies FIDE of your demise.Stewart Reuben wrote: ↑Wed Apr 15, 2020 1:50 amIf you had a FIDE Rating, your name and last rating continues to appear in the FIDE Rating List until removed.

In the past, I had great difficulty removing some names from the FIDE list. The ECF is much better now and FIE respond more efficiently. . I doubt all federations are as efficient.

And you could probably get away with sitting in the spectator seats at Hastings unnoticed.

When someone unfortunately is deceased, your local grader should be informed so the ECF grading system can be amended to show (deceased). Bearing in mind that the on-line data goes back to 1994 there must be dozens of players who have passed on, often with no one being aware.

Neil - that's all very well in theory, but is only practical where the player continues to be active and/or in contact with the chess community until they depart. The grading list contains many players young as well as old who play a limited amount and then vanish completely. I've had the experience of players dying and the grader being correctly advised, but just as common people returning after a ten or thirty year break.

I agree totally - however I guess there are plenty of players (or ex-players) who have died where someone has the knowledge to ask for amendments to be made. I know of a couple - I'll let the local grader know so the players are marked as (deceased).J T Melsom wrote: ↑Sat Apr 18, 2020 11:03 amNeil - that's all very well in theory, but is only practical where the player continues to be active and/or in contact with the chess community until they depart. Neil - now would be a good time for any club officers on this forum to do a check of members on the grading list, graded and un-graded. I've just found an oversight on my own patch, particularly unfortunate as I attended the funeral. Sadly I suspect there are others unknown to me.
