So it does - I wonder whether he regards himself like that. Satire can of course be hard to spot nowadays, truth having overtaken fiction in so many ways.

It is a reference to chess in a book, just like my previous posts in this thread. I guess its just descriptive prose, nothing more than that. Some time back I did suggest that we might have a separate thread, but books are 'media' so I think its legitimate. I think it is actually quite interesting how many authors still refer to chess.
