Re: Media comments on chess
As I understand it, or rather what Malcolm's tweets state that Malcolm is still doing Sunday to Friday each week in the paper ie 6 days and its just that his Saturday column has been replaced by a crossword with Mickey doing a chess column on Saturdays instead. Malcolm's Saturday columns can still be read at chess.co.uk, I'm not a reader of Boris Johnson's PR machine anyway but really, even if I was, how vexed as a chess player, should I be about this?

Malcolm used to have 7 columns and Michael 1. Now Malcolm has 6 and Michael1. Chris, you spent nearly as much time writing the above, as you would writing to the editor.
In 1983, the Sunday Times pulled the chess column. We mounted a similar campaign and th column was reinstated - and has been there ever since.

Now the Daily Telegraph has one chess column on a Saturday rather than two. The Daily Telegraph is therefore not pulling the chess column as the Sunday Times did in its entirety. So the question I was asking was not whether I could write to the editor but whether I should because I really can't see the fire here.Stewart Reuben wrote: ↑Wed Jul 15, 2020 12:06 amMalcolm used to have 7 columns and Michael 1. Here is Malcolm's latest Telegraph column which you can read for free and even download it as a pgn.

"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Nice cover. According the 29th June 1974 New York Times Bobby Fischer had renounced his world title.
I wonder if the cover related to a story inside as Chess and Bobby Fischer was back in the news again.

Chris Rice Why not support the elected International Director and FIDE Delegate of the ECF? Neither post is paid and it is what Malcolm wants.

Good grief! Two columns on chess in the Daily Telegraph on a Saturday. Who saw that coming?

Chessboxing....
I agree - actually, I'm not even sure that boxing has "proper organising bodies"...

I have been reading today a 19th century article on stock market speculation and unexpected events which cause reversals. It contains
“The profoundest chess-player may see an inevitable mate, and yet, if the chandelier falls upon the pieces, may never win that game.”

Re: Media comments on chess
From Mike Brearley's book "On Cricket", a fragment of an interview conducted by David Sylvester in 2001, on the aesthetics of sport and the arts.
MB - "He (the bowler-kjt) needs a good batsman to bring out the best parts of his bowling, and I need him as an excellent bowler to bring out the arts of my batting. At these rare times, I could feel this sort of oneness with my antagonist. Mostly I was too anxious or pragmatic, for that, or too insecure; but there were these valuable experiences of a sort of union between us."
DS - "As it is in chess."
MB - "As it is in chess".
The rest of the book is a bit more readable than that!

Interview in South Africa publication with Gary Younge, well-known British journalist, writer and now university professor.
When I left, Ronnie Kasrils had been a member of Parliament and I used to play chess with him in journalist David Beresford’s back yard.
