Elizabeth Pahtz may disagree.
Er, yes, fair enough. I did not see the "my account was hacked" defence coming. I was just trying to make the point that amateur anti-cheating is relevant to participation rates.

Actually "my account was hacked" seems important, since it is used quite a lot when someone posts something misjudged and wants to disassociate themselves with the consequences. For those who feel online cheating should have consequences OTB, they should expect to have to deal with this line of defence, whether it is true or not.

I see it as analogous to statistical cheat detection, the people flagged by Ken Regan's software, chess.com or lichess are probably cheats. But they are not proven to be cheats beyond reasonable doubt to the satisfaction of many people. Of course some people consider proof beyond reasonable doubt unnecessary. The "I was hacked" defence is another way for people to create doubt, because in some cases it will be true.

Does she normally post when playing?

In a new twist Ken Regan's screening tool is to be used to detect English arbiters closely following FIDE laws. To date no significant matching has been found.
English arbiters are trained to take no notice of anything which you say, but I have decided to depart from that in order to make this statement.

Reminds me of an incident in which a Kings Head player apparently (I wasn't there) brained his opponent with a chess clock (analogue, I believe, rather than digital)

I'm a little disappointed to see a player unceremoniously booted off the England junior team at the end of the Glorney Gilbert Online International back leading a team at the Junior 4NCL this evening. I'd have thought there would have been some form of sanction or deterrent, not just a shiny new Lichess account and away you go!

'Disappointed', but not 'surprised', I would imagine

Good that FIDE asks members. Will ECF?

Would either the 4NCL or the 4NCL team organiser have known the player's identity either officially or unofficially?

Perhaps FIDE will give everyone a good steer and a bit more confidence after they conduct their survey?

I'm not holding my breath. Armed with the results of a survey or not, I expect FIDE will pass the buck back to national bodies and ask them to sort out their own online and OTB cheating issues, as was reported in Arbiting Matters Too (Issue 39) in December 2019 over an OTB incident:

"the FIDE Ethics Commission has returned the resolution of the case resulting from a 4NCL Congress to the ECF. The ECF will now have to consider forming a group to deal with the matter and any similar cases. As has been reported here previously, FIDE would be swamped with similar cases and so has required national federations to deal with such incidents and inform FIDE of the outcome."

Bearing in mind that the junior director and a prominent member of the 4ncl team bear an uncanny similarity it's safe to assume yes.
