The Englishman who has an MBE is Nigel Short.
I think he mentioned it also, when he played a group of us Lancastrians in a simul at Blackburn a number of years ago.
I was the second last to finish after nearly four hours.
I played a dodgy opening but fought back and missed a draw in the endgame.
Nigel was very complimentary after and said that I was 'very tenacious'.
I would like to post the game on the forum sometime in the future if that's ok with you all.

There's Sir Peter Swinnerton-Dyer whose name used to be attached to some theory in the Ponziani alongside his Bridge, Maths and administrative achievements. He was hereditary though.

I was thinking that the lament over the past 20 years of a (relative) lack of honours for chess players and organisers seems to pass over the fact that the longest period of no honours was in fact between 1985 and 1999 (Keene and Short). Was there a reason for no honours in those 14 years? Or is the history more nuanced than that?

Presumably a combination of Milner-Barry's retirement administering the honours system and the embarrassment of an honour going to Keene made those involved less favourably disposed towards chess.

The separate New Zealand system is of more recent vintage.
