Messrs Short, Taylor and Callaghan are three of my five. I had never heard of John Newling Cloake.
Delete John Newling Cloake : mistake on my part.

Apologies.

I've compiled (what I hope) is now a complete list of person cited for chess in either the UK New Year Honours List or Queen's Birthday Honours List.

This may be found here : https://britishchessnews.com/honours-for-chess/

However, two queries remain...

I cannot locate an entry for

Mario Garcia, BEM, 2014, NYH, Vice president, Gibraltar Chess Association. “For services to promoting chess in Gibraltar”

in any of the "normal" UK official lists or for

Larry Ebbin, MBE, 2016, NYH, “For services to the community”

However, Mario Garcia IS listed in

the

NEW YEAR HONOURS 2014
DIPLOMATIC SERVICE AND OVERSEAS LIST

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... s_list.pdf

Help with finding a listing for LE would be appreciated.

I think I recall William Fairhurst being made a CBE, but whether it was for chess or structural engineering, I couldn't say.

Fairhurst was awarded the CBE (Civil Division) in the 1961 Queen's Birthday Honours List.

The entry reads :

William Albert Fairhurst, Senior Partner, F. A. Macdonald & Partners, Consulting Engineers.

Gerald Frank Anderson, MBE - an IM in chess composition.
Robin Charles Oliver Matthews, CBE, FBA - IM in chess composition, Master of Clare College, Cambridge.

I intend to add to the list notable chess players who have received honours nothing to do with chess and these are included. Thanks anyway !

Thanks Richard : I take it then that we should not expect to find LE or MG mentioned in the UK published lists for those years ?

I will correct that.

Should be MBE, 1959, New Years Honours List.

I thought you found MG in the published lists? There appear to be two separate strands of UK published lists - the main one, and the Diplomatic Service & Overseas lists issued by the Foreign Secretary.

However LE received the Badge of Honour/Queens Certificate which isn't an award linked to the UK so it doesn't seem to appear on the UK lists and you have to start relying on eg. Bermuda Govt communications and local press reports.

I have to admit that DS threw me (my fault) by referring to Murray Chandler as being on a separate list. I (therefore) made the faulty assumption that both LE and MG should be found on the main UK lists. When I could not find them I was stumped.

Anyway, we've got to the bottom of it at last !

Are there no women?

Other than (the late) Mrs Nancy C Elder of Dundee: MBE 1974 for services to chess, whose name should be added to the list, that is.

A Dundee school teacher, she was 15 times Scottish women's champion and very active in coaching, organising and captaining all levels of women's and girls' events/teams (and she also notably coached not a few younger and rather strong boys). A highly deserved award.
