'I am quite content with Jack's decision to move the post to the "Not Chess" section.'

Maybe do a swap. Bring the post about Jonathan and Oliver Penrose's brother Roger recently winning
the Nobel Prize here. Jonathan and Oliver are well known chess players and it was reported in the media.
I didn't realise they were brothers !!

I had overlooked that Roger had won the Nobel prize. Thank you. The father was also a major academic figure. When the daughter failed the 11+, people joked that was the end of the mandatory exam.

From

Hodgson, Shirley: transcript of an audio interview (04-Nov-2015)

https://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/bitstream ... equence=4

SH:Well, I went to an ordinary primary school. In fact, in those days I used to walk about a mile when I was about six to this school on my own every day. Then it came to the 11+ exam and I failed it, and it was just terrible. I felt really devastated, and then I took it again and I failed again. I remember doing it on my own in the classroom and just crying. And my dad said, ‘We’ll have to send you to private school.

I follow BookTrust, the children's reading charity, on Twitter, and just saw this tweet, displaying the covers of some books they're sending to schools. My eye was drawn to one of them in particular...

...and as far as I can gather it's about a boy who learns chess from his grandfather.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Last night ITV 9pm until 10pm The Savoy.
Fly on the wall programme about staff working at The Savoy luxury 5☆ hotel in London.
There was a piece about the General Manager of the Thames Foyer running afternoon tea. She was called Athena.
She was promoted to General Manager of the Simpson's restaurant. Athena was shown her new office and on the shelf was a large number of chess pieces.
They seemed to be the basic pieces that are used at Chess Congresses.

Apologies Justin. I had a problem with my phone when I was posting. I thought it didn't accept the New Topic, which is why I posted it again in media comments.
I've not learnt how to edit or delete posts yet either. I think also I lost a PM that someone sent me Wednesday last week.
Did you watch the Film?
I thought it was great
Did you play at Linares?
I hear there might be a few OTB tournaments coming up in Spain soon.

From today's Wikepedia "Did you know ..." section

... that five-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand and India's first woman Everest climber Bachendri Pal received the Arjuna award in the 1980s, then India's highest sporting honour?

From a piece in Jacobin about the 2000 Florida election controversy:
It felt like those famous chess tournaments with one little table in a big room, a tense silence, and a crowd behind red ropes staring at your every twitch.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I received an email this morning from "Mountain Warehouse" headed, "Checkmate | The Perfect Autumn Shirt", a selection of shirts with a check pattern. If you follow the link, it doesn't mention checkmate again.
