I think Topalov's lost here. ...Qxb2 followed by ...c3-c2-c1 is quite a nasty threat to deal with when the rook is tied down like that.

I think it's curtains. So long, Topalov, nice knowing you.IM Jack Rudd wrote:I think Topalov's lost here. ...Qxb2 followed by ...c3-c2-c1 is quite a nasty threat to deal with when the rook is tied down like that.

Topalov resigned. The king is (not) dead. Long live the king!

So my feeling is that over the 12 games justice was done so perhaps a dozen is enough after all?!
Cunning match strategy from Vishy - score the decisive breakthrough as late as possible when it's too late for Danailov to do anything about it.

Good result for chess, and interesting to see a win with black decide it
Look forward to seeing Vishy defend in London 2012, and hope his challenger is also interested in fair play and presents a good image for chess

You took the words from my mouth. Con the Bulgarians into thinking their boy had a chance, then beat him in the last game -- and beat him with black, thus conveying the message, "Look, chump, I've just been toying with you. I could have polished you off much earlier."Jonathan Bryant wrote:Cunning match strategy from Vishy - score the decisive breakthrough as late as possible when it's too late for Danailov to do anything about it.

I'm pleased and somewhat relieved it didn't go to tie-breaks - Quickplay is no way to decide the World Champion.

I didn't think it was possible, but the BBC website coverage of the result was actually less than for the 2008 match.

Yes it is disappointing. I said to myself, as I read the result of the match this morning, "You know, I haven't seen this anywhere on the BBC or any of the other newspapers i read online." Pretty poor.
It was nice to see Vishy knocking the predictions of the pundits though.

The Daily Telegraph has a report, but I can't find anything yet in the Times, Guardian or Independent. I did find an account in the latter of Anand's volcano-affected travel difficulties, along with a preview of the match. It's classified - believe it or not - under 'Life & Style > Fashion > Features'.

Thanks for the link.
Spess has been covering the match in his Indy column - but generally he is one day behind. I haven't checked the paper today but I wouldn't be surprised if his game 12 analysis and comment comes out tomorrow. The Guardian is alone in the papers that you mention in not having a daily chess column. Shame on them.
The news coverage of the match is disappointing but sadly not surprising.

The Guardian chess columns by Daniel King and myself www.guardian.co.uk/sport/chess which you can also access pnline via the left-hand column of the BCM links page, have both been analysing the match, including volcanic ash, for the last few weeks. The final game result appeared this morning in the results section of the sports page.Ian Kingston wrote:The Daily Telegraph has a report, but I can't find anything yet in the Times, Guardian or Independent. Thanks for that. Do you happen to know if that's a new policy to return to publishing the chess results in the sports section - or why they stopped doing so for that matter?Leonard Barden wrote:The final game result appeared this morning in the results section of the sports page.
