British Chess Championships 2010
Here we go again. Who’s coming to Canterbury in July? My entry’s in for the U-140 graded championships and there are already plenty of familar names in the graded sections. The last time the Britsh Championships were held in Kent was 1929 when the event took place in Ramsgate. There were just 12 invited entrants, including Mir Sultan Khan, who won the first of his three British titles, and included the great chess organiser (and a former top Board at my Club) W (Wilfred). H. M.Kirk, who finished 11th. Okay it wasn’t the greatest line-up ever, but are any British GMs going to turn-up in 2010? At the moment (21 May 2010)the entry looks feeble.

I have entered the U160 Championship and will be there for the second week. The Friends of Chess AGM is likely to take place on the afternoon of the middle Sunday: all are welcome to attend.

Entering the U140 and U120. Entering the Rapid Play in the first weekend and the lower ranked weekend tournamant during the second weekend.
Partner is enterting the U140 and U160, Rapid Play and Weekender.
Daughter is defending the title she won at Under 8 level last year. Also playing in the U10s and the first Rapidplay.
Can't wait.
Hoping for a poker night to spring up somewhere too.

I'll be there but there is slightly less than no chance I'll be playing (that doesn't necessarily apply to the quiz though...)

It might lack top players, but in terms of numbers, there are 15 more in 2010 than 2009 at the same date.David Gilbert wrote:At the moment (21 May 2010)the entry looks feeble.

To the OP - I believe there is no start money for GM's this year, as opposed to £500 last year. Pretty much explains it?
I guess Adams has someone willing to pay £5000+ for him to take part.

I am playing in the Weekend U125 section. Hoping to combine it with a little holiday as well...good weather would be a bonus.
Maybe next year I'll feel brave enough to enter the U16 Championships, but right now there are some downright scary FIDE ratings entered in there, and I don't think I can compete...

Should be sending off my Championship entry form this week, looking forward to the tournament. The form mentions computer rooms - like at Swansea, will these be freely available for preparation etc.? I'd like to know whether I'll need to bring a laptop.

Phil I'm not 100% sure how available these are but would assume there will be a charge. I know there will be a charge on the control team for a wifi connection.

There are plenty of places in Canterbury that offer free wifi connections, and depending on where you are staying this could also be on offer. I think you can access the net at the public library, if you book a slot.
The cost of wifi dongles has dropped greatly, which makes it practical to connect to the net from anywhere at a reasonable cost. MiFi (look at three.co.uk for offers) is my favourite wireless wifi hub, though not the cheapest - it means that several people can share the wifi and share the cost!

Is that right? Only 18 entrants, and no GMs apart from Mickey?www.britishchess2010.com/entrants.htm wrote:Entries as at 26th May

If you were a professional player why would you enter? No conditions and a Mickey to contend with? You really have to finish second just to pay the mortgage!
I'm sure we will see some more GM's enter, but perhaps not many more. It is very difficult for the organisers of the British to assemble a good quality GM field without a serious sponsor. Lets hope CJ can get something together for Sheffield, hopefully the participation of Mickey and Nigel after the London Chess Classic and the Kasparov Dinner will encourage some media interest.
