British Chess Championship 2024
Details of the 2024 Championship to be announced soon. Encouragingly early.

Re: British Chess Championship 2024
The date and venue for the 2023 Championships were announced on or about 20th January 2023.
We also don't know dates and venues for the English Championships, including the Senior versions.
It's usually in May, but if one might be planning to play the Frome Congress, there's a potential clash of dates.

Please can we consider starting a Senior Over 75 Section now. The Over 65s covers too wide an age range now that people are in better health and playing competitive chess well into their 80s.

I would support a Veterans section at 80+ which retains a 15-year symmetry of 50+, 65+, 80+. Depending on entries the 80+ could either stand alone or be subsumed in the 65+.Maurice Lawson wrote: ↑Sun Jan 14, 2024 11:52 pmPlease can we consider starting a Senior Over 75 Section now. Perhaps the baby boom is a factor in this. Right now, there must be a lot of players over 75, but it will be a few years before they reach 80.

So now might be a good time to introduce an 80 plus section, to bed it in before the rush later this decade.

I agree with John. As somebody who will turn 76 in summer, I would favour a 75+ event.Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Tue Jan 16, 2024 6:41 pmSo now might be a good time to introduce an 80 plus section, to bed it in before the rush later this decade.
There are already a few in Germany (called Nestorenturnier).
I think 80+ might not get much support.

It is normal for the open events to be held across town from the championship events? Feels like you might lose a sense of the scale of the occasion.

It's happened in the past. I can recall Eastbourne in 1973 and Aberystwyth in 2014. As far as I can recall, the events in 2018 were all in the Town Hall, but perhaps in separate rooms.

There was a rapidplay in 2018 that was at a separate venue. It could be the same setup this time.

Re: British Chess Championship 2024
It's only about 10 minutes walk isn't it? And both are close to the train station
The Glorney that preceeds it is at the University which is further, I know
It's a good choice and I hope it will be a success
And it's the best place in the UK for a staycation
