That happens to be true! 1 spot to the winner of both the World Cup and Grand Swiss in that caseIM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2024 4:33 pmAbasov didn't come via the Grand Swiss, he came via the World Cup.

And only because Carlsen, who qualified via the World Cup, declined his placeIM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2024 4:33 pmAbasov didn't come via the Grand Swiss, he came via the World Cup.

True enough, but the list of players he did beat in that event was amazing.Mick Norris wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2024 8:25 pmAnd only because Carlsen, who qualified via the World Cup, declined his placeIM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2024 4:33 pmAbasov didn't come via the Grand Swiss, he came via the World Cup.

Gukesh and Zhongyi Tan who won their respective candidates were both born on the 29th May...er...that's it.

It is a genuinely striking coincidence, so not much more needs to be added.

- I guess Gukesh is going to be my pick for Real GM™ in 2024 then
- The first open WCC match between two protonymous individuals. Though Gukesh like Friðrik Ólafsson is properly addressed by his given name, and Ding like Leko Peter goes around with his surname in front.
- Still, I would expect the media to expand his name to "Gukesh Dommaraju" at least if he wins. Gukesh D looks like we've either forgotten to ask him his surname, or he is a purveyor of sicc beats like Jessie J and Cardi B.
- I like the World Cup qualifying path. I like the concept that if a Tanzanian shepherd girl gets struck by lightning just right and wakes up an invincible chess machine, she has a narrow path to becoming the next World Champion without playing in a ton of tournaments and becoming the 6th best player in the world. It's old school, like when winning the British qualified you for the West Europe Zonal.
- Still, there seems a good statistical case that, for a given level of ability, being better at beating tournament back-markers probably makes you a worse bet against the current World Champion, because it indicates that your performance variance is lower. This may have been more of a thing when Carlsen was WC.
