I actually had a non chess player remind me there was a world chess day, that's how insignificant the event is in my eyes, seems like if you do or believe anything these days that you need a "day" in honour of your small contribution - well not me, i play chess a lot but it doesn't define who i am and I'll never want to celebrate it.

7.2 million games? Where was everybody? Most of the 600 million chess players did not participate. Anybody would think most of them don't exist.

FiDE would only count games that it knew about. I decided not to get involved with that as game playing conditions would have to be up to FIDE standards and that is not possible for the sort of outdoor chess meetups I like - so where was I that day? organising, publicising and playing chess!

It was well celebrated in London last year.
