1st Surrey Junior Congress
I have just uploaded the first Surrey Junior Congress from 1968, to my website here
https://www.surreyrapidchess.org.uk/
It features future stars such as Mike Surtees, Roger Webb, Nigel Povah, John Nunn and Terry Chapman.
There appears to be missing 4 names as the total for the congress was 117, but the totals for each section are:-
Under 18 - 16 players
Under 16 - 17 players (definitely one missing here as last place is published as 18th)
Under 14 - 37 players
Under 12 - 43 players
Please feel free to give me any more first names that I am missing, the report was published originally with only initials.
Surprisingly, no pupils from Beverley or Trinity (Briant Poulter league champions 1966 to 1969).

Paul,
You are much to be congratulated on the archive you have developed: I hope it is appreciated.
What was evidence on the connections of Brian Poulter and Camberley Chess Club?
Will you include the Surrey Border League in your archive?

Re: 1st Surrey Junior Congress
I hoped to do better, but I can offer more names.
The U18 Trophy is surely the "Michell" Memorial Shield, named after RP Michell, who lived just outside Kingston.
U18 - I think it is Alan Keene (who played later for Streatham I think), and David Moore from Dorking.
U14 - David Moore's brother is John. I never played David, but both were good players and really nice guys. I wonder what happened to them - they seemed to disappear as soon as they left school.
Organizers - Frank Winter, Paul Durrant, RE Boxall, WE "Bill" Waterton (one of his daughters was I think Zillah), JS Pattle, David Shallcross, Fred Manning, probably GC Lund, who was from Banstead I think. I played him once in the Battle of Britain tournament.
And, 1976, U16 runner up is Nigel E Stanley (Reigate Grammar School and Redhill) (edit)
More if I can remember anything.

Re: 1st Surrey Junior Congress
Paul, your website is a really excellent resource and I'm sure I shall be visiting it a lot.
I'm glad to see you are finding at least one forename for players where possible. I might be able to help with this. I haven't gone through the names in any detail yet but here are a few observations so far...
Coles, Richard N (1932 Felce Cup) - probably best to record him as Coles, (Richard) Nevil as he was known by his middle name. (See Edward Winter article.)
Graham Speed (1966 Trost Trophy)
Terence Clifford Noyce (1960, 1961, 1964 Trost Trophy)
Eric J Simpson (1958 Slater-Kennington)
Robert Edmond Borland (1959 Slater-Kennington)
Ralph Bradbury Kay (1948 Wernick Cup)

Paul,
What was your evidence that showed Brian Poulter to be associated with Camberley Chess Club?

I'll add those first names, though I think it was Douglas Shallcross of Kingston (ex-Surrey Champion).

You're right. It was for the Michell Memorial Shield.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 2:53 pm

I haven't come across the winner yet, so don't I know who won Mike or Roger (I'm guessing R. Webb is Roger Webb).
All winners I have found so far are
1950 B. R. Barry, RGS Guildford bt E. J. Alexander, Purley
1955 Alan K. May, Kingston Grammar bt A. W. Jones, Wilson's G.S. & J. Nash, Guildford (in a 3-way playoff)
1961 Ronald A. Harris, Whitgift
1963 Michael J. Basman, Surbiton
1968 Michael J. Surtees, Camberley Grammar OR Roger Webb Purley Grammar
1972 H. A. Hedges, Glyn Grammar School
1973 John D. M. Nunn,
1974 Robin W. Haldane,
Also, the Elaine Saunders Cup
1972 Miss E. Sadler, Guildford County School for Girls
1973 Miss Wanda Pritchard,
1974 Miss Helen Granat,

It's a bit of a hotch botch so far, but I will tidy up soon. Once I've entered all the names of the players into a database.

This is most helpful. What is the earliest yearbook you have that lists Camberley?
