Glenn Lambert (1957-2003)

Post by John Saunders » Sun Feb 14, 2010 5:40 pm

Glenn Lambert's name cropped up in a thread here last August (http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php ... ert#p15170).

Sadly, he seems to have died in 2003, according to the following webpage (written by Tim Love)...

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mariella.g ... nnlambert/

... which has details of his chess career. It concludes: "He started hearing voices in 1980 and was later diagnosed with Huntingdon's [sic] Chorea." Details and date of death are not given.

Yes, Jack, it was what Woody Guthrie died of.

Glenn Lambert's death was registered Q3 2003 (with his first name misspelled as Glen) - date of birth given as 8 September 1957.

I know this is 15 years after the thread was started and 22 years after Glenn Lambert died, but here is a game of his that appears to have made it online by being scanned in 2022:

https://hampshirechesshistory.co.uk/wp- ... s-1979.pdf

From Chess Notes (1 January 1979, p.2):
The following high-quality game was played in the first round of the 1978 Aaronson Open Tournament in which the Hungarian Grand master, G. Forintos, had the White pieces against the Portsmouth Chess Club player, Glenn Lambert (who is currently graded 208 and who supplied the notes).

1. P-Q4 N-KB3; 2. P-QB4 P-K3; 3. N-QB3 P-Q4; 4. N-B3 B-K2; 5. B-B4 O-O; 6. P-K3 P-QB4; 7. QP x P N-B3; 8. P-QR3 B x P; 9. Q-B2 Q-R4; 10. R-Q1 R-K1 (this move was played in the 21st match game Korchnoi-Karpov, with the sacrifice 12. ... N-Q5 in mind. Probably stronger is 10. ... B-K2, which Karpov played in the 23rd game); 11. N-Q2, P-K4; 12. B-N5 N-Q5; 13. Q-N1 (13. P x N? P x P +; 14. N-K2 N-N5; 15. B-R4 P x P is good for Black); 13. ... B-B4; 14. B-Q3 P-K5; 15. B-K2? (Korchnoi played 15. B-B2 and won, but it was unconvincing; perhaps best of all is 15. B-B1) 15. ... N x B; 16. N x N B-K2; 17. O-O B-KN5; 18. KR-K1 P x P; 19. B x N B x B; 20. N x BP Q-R3; 21. P-QN3 QR-Q1; 22. R x R R x R; 23. P-QR4 B x N; 24. R x B B-B6; 25. R-B2 B-N5; 26. R-B1 Q-K3; 27. R-Q1 R-Q4; 28. Q-R1 Q-Q2; 29. R x R Q x R; 30. Q-Q4 Q x Q; 31. P x Q P-B4; 32. P-B3 P x P; 33. P x P K-B2; 34. P-Q5 P-KN4; 35. K-B2 K-B3; 36. K-N3 P-KR4; 37. P-R3 B-B6; 38. P-B4 B-K8+; 39. K-N2 P-N5 See Diagram: White now offered the draw, which Black accepted. [diagram] J.E.C.G.
Am currently converting this to algebraic.

The canny GM (White) offered the draw as Black is actually completely winning in the final position. It is not clear if time trouble was a factor, or if Lambert paid Forintos too much respect here.

Here's the same game with all the header info...

I don't understand why people find it so difficult to present games on the forum with all the header info in place. Whatever chess software you use to input or access the game - ChessBase, HIARCS, LiChess, SCID, etc - should allow you to copy a game in PGN format. Then all you need to do is click on PGN above the forum post input window - and then paste ALL the PGN data, headers and all, between the delimiters and it's job done.

If it's done properly, it makes life a lot easier for the reader, particularly if they want to download the game to their computer, which can be done by clicking on the c8 square on the board and then copy what appears in the pop-up window. If you exclude all the header data, player names, etc, then a lot of tedious typing is involved.

Not rocket science, guys!

I seems Lambert had a habit of believing his opponents. In the Lord John Cup 1977 Vs Alexander Kotov (as White) pressured Glenn Lambert to resign in what was in fact a drawable position. Lambert, being relatively inexperienced at top international level, took Kotov’s word for it and resigned, only to discover afterwards that the position was not lost.

Great to see the game on Britbase and the ECF Forums. The Portsmouth Evening News Chess Notes was a fantastic newspaper column, with a couple of long standing editors from 1957 to probably the early 2000's. There was often a game included in the article and if I ever get time I will add these to the specific articles. As John went to the effort of completing this one I have added to the article, with the addition of the original notes from Glenn Lambert.

I did not know Glenn, but he was a very talented junior and there are probably other games of his included in the published (and non published) columns on my website.

It wouldn't be difficult to find people, juniors in the time of Terry Hollington, from Ian Welch to Peter Wells, from Carey Groves to Jane Seymour, who knew him quite well. He was adjudicator at the Hampshire U18s I played in in 1975 (hard to believe for the current generation why we even needed one - no quick finishes) and he and PJ Lee, not to be confused with PN Lee, were the top players in the county thereabouts. He did well when the British visited his home town in 1976. I was told he gave a blindfold simul at his club prior to going into St Nicholas's. I assume this is a care home. The rest is recorded here better than I know. Very sad.

Worth pointing out that the original website that John quoted from in 2010 appears not to be around any more. I cannot find it on the Wayback Machine, though I have not looked to see if it moved elsewhere. (Some of the other pages on the 'mariella.gregori' part of that ntl personal website appear to have been archived at the Wayback Machine, e.g. this, which randomly does have some chess content! Maybe someone better than me at digging through the Wayback Machine might find the Glenn Lambert material if it is there.)

Funnily enough I was just trying to find a backup of that page myself. The best I could come up with was this:
https://litrefsarticles.blogspot.com/20 ... ature.html
which contains the ""He started hearing voices in 1980 ..." quote but the chess career seems to be that of Tim Love rather than Glenn Lambert. It contains a link to the same mariella.gregori page that is now lost.

Although the name is "Tim", and they appear to be "TPL", their CV is here.

Apparently "Tim" (TPL - Tim Love) came "3rd in British U-18s chess championship" in 1975. His wife is easily found by her publication record. Why did he have a page on Glenn Lambert, was he related to Glenn?

I cannot actually find a Tim P. Love who came third in the 1975 British U18s chess championship.

I did find Tim Love's current webpages:

https://www.timlove.org.uk/cv/
Our school was the best in the country for chess. I managed 3rd in the UK U-18 championships when the best players of my age were elsewhere
I will stop there, as this thread should really be about Glenn Lambert.

There are records for the Hampshire U18 championships that Tim Love played in:

https://hampshirechesshistory.co.uk/ham ... 1975-1976/
Paul Hackman could not achieve the hattrick of wins, as after winning his first two games, could only add another half point in his last three games. Tim Love, who was third in the 73 / 74 Under 18 and did not participate in 74 / 75 jointly won with four wins and a last round draw to share with Steve Hooker who also won his first four games.

I do know know much about Tim Love, but noticed that he was playing for Norfolk by 1978, as detailed in some of the excellent SCCU Bulletins which are available at the SCCU website.
Not sure if Tim Love ever played in a UK British U18 championships? Not that important.

(He did play in the 1974 British U-16 Championship.)

Found it.

1976 British Championships
1976 British U-18 Championship (11-rd Swiss)
(1) Jonathan C Benjamin (London) 8½/11; (2) Nigel R Davies 8; (3-6) Simon J B Knott, Timothy P Love, Graham Morrison, David R Stringer 7;
