Steve Thrower

[Simon Rogers]

I am sorry to inform you that Steve Thrower passed away on 10th March 2025.
Steve played for Hull Chess Club in the Hull and East Riding Chess Association League.
He first played for Hull Chess Club D team in the 1990's. Over the following 25 years, Steve played in almost every match for Hull D, whilst at the same time captaining the Hull X team.
On a personal note, I played Steve a couple of times on the Congress circuit and chatted with him on numerous occasions. Steve was a very pleasant chap and easily approachable. I will miss particularly our catch-up's at the Scarborough Chess Congress.
His funeral took place on Monday 31st March 2025 at Lelley Fields Crematorium, Hull.
RIP

[Andrew Zigmond]

Sorry to hear this news. Steve was a familiar face to me at Harrogate vs Hull matches around the turn of the century and in 2002-03 we were captains respectively of Harrogate C and Hull B as we tussled for the title in what would be the last proper fourth division of the Yorkshire League for twenty years. He was always a genial and pleasant man to do business with. Despite being in the same strength bracket I don't think he and I ever played.
