Yes, I got the Hornby and Barlow reference.

Some nice memories in the comments here:

Apparently Francis Thompson (who died from TB aged 47) never made it to Lords. He was given tickets but decided not to go as it would make him too emotional, so wrote the poem instead. (This is from the page J T Melsom linked to.)

I am very similar and the Cardus quote did not escape me (I think he was talking about Maclaren, maybe Spooner).

Sometimes I think my chess education took place in a different world. Of course it was pre-engine, so there was no easy way to spot my mistakes. Does anyone read Nimzowitsch these days? I doubt it. I suspect any knowledge of Nimzo is limited to the Salwe game, maybe Johner and of course the immortal zugzwang game.
Alekhine duffing him up in 19 moves (I think it was) as well.

Hornby can be seen in action in this 1901 film from the Mitchell and Kenyon collection

I realise that (in general) books are out of fashion these days, but surely "My System" would still be the main recommendation to any new player who wanted to learn the principles of positional chess?

On the comment that books are out of fashion...

According to BookScan UK, physical book sales (of all genres) peaked at about 226M units in 2010. They now stand at roughly 195M, which is still higher than 1998, 2000, 2014, 2016, and 2019. While the usual warnings about definitions, data-gathering, roundings, and estimates apply, this should give you some idea of the state of the industry.

Possibly. But not only have I never read it, I don't recall having ever seen it. Which is unusual for something so supposedly ubiquitous in this regard.

To get us back on track here, I thought I would plug the BritBase Chess Library...

https://www.saund.org.uk/britbase/britb ... ments.html

... which has grown considerably in the past few weeks.

As well as the 1969 Marlow Congress souvenir programme linked to in this thread, there are now a few more such programmes from the same event...

Marlow Congress programmes: 1968 1970 1971 1972 1974 and after it morphed into the Berks & Bucks Congress (Amersham), 1978 1979

Of more general interest are programmes from British Championships: 1969 (Rhyl) 1971 (Blackpool)

I've added some SCCU Grading Lists: (the 1970 one has been in the library for a long time): 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984

There are also some additional tournament bulletins which you can browse, plus a few collections of London League results of the 1980s.

The reason the library has grown is that I'm trying to digitise the accumulated paper mountain of half a century, after which I can hopefully throw out all the physical paper. I find it hard not to be a hoarder but with any luck the judicious use of a scanner will downsize my problem into the non-pathological affliction of digital hoarding.

Amazing resource curated by John and lovely to see them scanned.

Small plea. While it can be difficult to work out what is needed and not, there may be an archive willing to store the physical copies (which may not take up that much space). It is possible if you email the Archives at De Montfort University that they will say whether this sort of material is outside their scope (which may only include books and personal papers).

They moved from Twitter to Bluesky and are still posting every Tuesday by the looks of it:

I would recommend it to someone interested in the history of chess theory but not to someone trying to learn chess. Mastering Chess Strategy by Johan Hellsten is well regarded.

This is a thread about an online database. These are more popular now than they were in the 1920s.

Thanks for the game and the reminder, Gerard. I shall have to create a file for this tournament on BritBase in due course.

Two more, and a puzzle.

In this game, White leaves his a3 pawn en prise for no reason which leaves his Bishop en prise on move 57. Neither is taken. Then Black's 56...Kf5 would lose a piece. I suggest that move 33 is a4, not a3, which would make the analysis 51. b4 etc. nonsensical.

Alternate version where ironically, 57. b4 should draw.

The Hull Times - Saturday 12 September 1908 p.3 gives S. Jackson as residing at 22 Suffolk Street and Trade Directories identify him as Samuel Jackson, clerk.
