Re: Odd one out
Middlesex extends to Uxbridge in the West, Hackney in the East, Enfield in the North and Feltham & Staines in the South. Clubs can affiliate to the Middlesex League that meet outside the County. For County players, the SCCU and ECF rules re eligibility apply.
If you google Middlesex, you get a list of the London Borough's that are included in it.

Re: Odd one out
and all I asked was a mere simple question. I'll have to think up another.
Which is the odd one out? Kasparov, Karpov, Korchnoi, Capablanca. hmmm how many variations can you get on that?

Re: Odd one out
Well the most immediate answer that springs to mind is Korchnoi, since he was never the World Champion.Gavin Strachan wrote:and all I asked was a mere simple question. I'll have to think up another.

Re: Odd one out
correct. variation one. the literate answer is Capablanca begins with C; variation two: the chronological answer 3 K's played in the same era Capa is the odd one out.variation three: the geographical answer again Capablanca again was from Cuba the others from USSR/Russia. So, statistically Capablanca is the odd one out.

Re: Odd one out
The Middlesex shield has the Seaxe ('Middel - seaxe') on it - the blade with a notch in it.
Nobody has ever found an original Seaxe (it would be worth a fortune), nor worked out what the notch in the blade is for. Anyone got any good guesses?

Re: Odd one out
Except when you're at the sharp end of a dispute. In the twenty years or so during which I've been involved with the SCCU, things have got nasty for this sort of reason twice.Sean Hewitt wrote:This is almost as much fun as the NCCU boundary issues
Then someone comes along with a suggestion that the ECF should "abolish" the Union Qualifying Stages of the Counties Championships, and the SCCU counties rapidly pull together.

Re: Odd one out
so does Essex:
and this is the real Middlesex shield:
commonly found in large numbers around the streets of Golders Green to protect Adam from the hoards of chess fans once a month.
Why does Middlesex have a sea axe when it has no coastline? hmmm pirates up the Thames?

Re: Odd one out
Another reason for Capablanca being the odd one out is that he is the only one to have given a sumultaneous display in Surrey.

I am surprised that Berks isn't in the SCCU considering it is next to London.

They're within the SCCU area, but they've chosen to disaffiliate. This has been discussed at http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=1841.Gavin Strachan wrote:I am surprised that Berks isn't in the SCCU considering it is next to London.

Re: Odd one out
I see. Allegedly one person has taken it upon themselves to disaffliate which seems a little autonomous. Would have thought that it would have been a committee decision. Oh well, their loss.

How do you put the Hammers logo into your profile?
EDIT: Why do you put the Hammers logo into your profile?
PS: 28th September is a good date to come to Hendon for a friendly...
