Re: British Chess Championships 2010
I've been following the discussions about the disputed game between French and Rayner with interest. Can anyone tell me who actually qualified from the Major Open for the British next year, and did the 1-0.5 result have any effect on that? Oh, and congratulations from me too for the coverage of the British - it was great fun following the games online, my only gripe being that it would have been nice to be able to load games from previous rounds into the viewer, rather than download the pgn files.
Re: British Chess Championships 2010
You could actually do that via the "PGN Games" link, which wasn't perhaps where you'd expect to find it:Christopher Kreuzer wrote:... my only gripe being that it would have been nice to be able to load games from previous rounds into the viewer, rather than download the pgn files.

Of course it does. The number of blunders caused by quickplay finishes and absurd time trouble at earlier stages is very much reduced.

I'd be interested to know the proportion of games of 80 moves and over in this tournament compared to previous editions.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
I found those pages last night after I posted that post! I'm positive that page only had PGN games available when I checked it in the first couple of days of the championships, and I never bothered going back to that page after that. Pity. It would be nice to know if my memory is right or whether they had the "replay" links from day one. As you say, a few links labelled "replay games" would have helped, both in the side bar and from the "live games" page, but it's a minor complaint. Overall, as an online spectator, I was mostly able to find what I wanted when I went to the website, though I didn't use the webcams much as they were a bit boring - did any video footage get recorded permanently for posterity?Jon D'Souza-Eva wrote:You could actually do that via the "PGN Games" link, which wasn't perhaps where you'd expect to find it:Christopher Kreuzer wrote:... my only gripe being that it would have been nice to be able to load games from previous rounds into the viewer, rather than download the pgn files.

The qualifying rule is 7.5/11 in the MO(7 if U21). Only French and de Coverley qualified by this route. I don't know Liam Rabbitte's age and I have assumed neither the winner, or Arne Hagessether are eligible.
I don't see how the 1-05 game could have affected that, except the butterfly effect. Every change in a Swiss has knock-on effects. The prize money is different.
It would be more than just nice to see a complete list of prizewinners for all sections.

The winner of the Major Open, Paul Talsma, played in the British Championship in 2007, so I presume he is still eligible. Liam Rabbitte was born in 1991 (click on his name in Swiss Master and it tells you).Stewart Reuben wrote:Christopher Kreuzer >Can anyone tell me who actually qualified from the Major Open for the British next year, and did the 1-0.5 result have any effect on that?<

I've just put up a blog post on yesterday's play at Canterbury, featuring an entertaining bishop endgame between Paul Byway and Paul Habershon which decided the British Senior Championship title.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
Hi Richard, good to be here and good to see you here too (and anyone else I know but haven't said hi to yet). Thanks for the answers to my questions, and thanks to Stewart for his answers as well. I'm still finding my way around here, but there is a *lot* to read from earlier posts. I do have a question about a rules dispute (not to do with the British Chess Championships) that I don't think has been raised before, at least not here - would a new thread in the "General Chat" board be the right place to post that?Richard James wrote:The winner of the Major Open, Paul Talsma, played in the British Championship in 2007, so I presume he is still eligible. That's linked from the main championship pages, but there is a mistake on the text there:
http://www.britishchess2010.com/index.htm
"Finishing two points clear"
Adams finished 1.5 points clear.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
Prizewinners 2010 On the British Championship site. There is the following statement:
A detailed list of prizewinners will be posted here in the near future.
What Lawrence referred to is a list of just the FIRST prize winners.
Christian Kreuzer asks about where he can get information relating to chess disputes. Gert Gijssen has an excellent column on chesscafe where he responds to queries. There are several very senior British Isles arbiters on this forum to whom you can address your queries. If it is a 'juicy' dispute, the thread of responses is likely to become very long if posted on this forum.
The main problem I find is getting all the correct facts.

It's Christopher, not Christian. It's normally my surname that people get wrong.Stewart Reuben wrote:Prizewinners 2010 On the British Championship site. There is the following statement:

Thanks for pointing me towards Gert Gijssen's column. Thinking on it, it's less of a dispute, more a question of chess etiquette actually, and as I was involved I should be able to remember the correct facts even though it was four years ago now (though possibly someone involved in a dispute can't be an objective witness to that dispute). I'll start a new thread on it.

Re: British Chess Championships 2010
Paul was unrated at Great Yarmouth so presumably had a choice ENG/NED.Richard James wrote:

At the prize-giving it was announced that Paul and Liam qualify. Liam was also involved in a 1.5 point "game".
Presumably Arne's qualification depends on whether he can justify the status of an English resident
Edit - Liam's win was on the board by virtue of his opponent's resignation - his opponent was later awarded an extra half point for bizarre reasons. - see Liam's post later. The tournament crosstable scored it as a full point bye. Presumably the Swiss Master programmers had as much difficulty with the concept of 1.5 points for a game as most players.
