Tie-break in jamborees.

Post by benedgell » Sun Sep 19, 2010 7:40 pm

In the open section of today's WECU Jamboree, Devon, Gloucs, and Somerset all finished on 6/12. There was nothing in the rules as regards a tie-break, so the teams agreed to share the cup, with each team getting it for a few months. Can anyone suggest a decent tie-break method for possible future use?

Board count / bottom board elimination for games won by the team would seem to be one reasonable suggestion.

In the case of pairings between players not on the same board, as sometimes occurs e.g. A4 v B5, I am unsure what the best choice would be. If A wins - should he be counted as 4 or 5? And vice versa. I suspect that you would have to count as your "own" board, since that way you guarantee that all teams have the potential to score the same number of points, but I have a general feeling that counting as the opposition board might possibly be fairer.

The SCCU rules are: http://www.sccu.ndo.co.uk/jamrul.htm
A win shall score 1 point and a draw ½ point. The winning team shall be the team which scores most points. Any ties shall be resolved as follows:-
a) number of wins
b) board count, obtained by adding the sum of the numbers of the boards won to half the sum of the number of the boards drawn - the lower or lowest total wins;
c) board elimination, from the bottom upwards.
[Not tackling the issue of a Board 4 beating a Board 3]

My recollection is that EPSCA for their U11/U9 Inter-county Jamborees also use number of wins.
