Eligibilty to play in Championship?

Post by John Upham » Fri Oct 15, 2010 11:37 am

I have been handed an entry form for the Hampshire Individual Championship by Gillian Moore.

I play for Berkshire in the Chiltern League

I play for two Surrey clubs (Camberley and Guildford)

I teach in various Hampshire schools.

My postcode is Surrey based (GU14)

My address is Hampshire based (Cove)

Am I eligible to play? :D

According to regular participants, the event is and always has been open. In the past it hasn't had much pre-event publicity outside the local county. Bristol area players though have been past winners - James Sherwin (USA/Bath/Somerset) for example.

Yes, because its open to anybody. You may not be eligible for the Hampshire individual championship title though.

My own status is also unclear. The entry form says that "The highest-placed Hampshire player in the Open will receive the Silver Rook for one year, and the title of County Champion." I clearly meet this criterion as I play county chess for Hampshire (qualified through residence in Hampshire). However, I am not a member of a chess club affiliated to the Hampshire Chess Association, nor am I an individual member, so I suspect the intention is that I should not be eligible.

You also could also argue that you are a Hampshire player on the grounds that it means a chess player resident in Hampshire. I doubt that's the organiser's intention.

The Somerset individual championship uses the same criteria as the eligibility for county matches; I'd assume this to be the same for other county individual championships unless they stated otherwise. In which case both John and Ian would be eligible for the title.

This is probably a matter which is best codified by each County rather than having an assumed answer. There was some frantic last minute ringing round in Essex over Easter before we concluded that Richard Pert (who now resides in the County) was entitled to be awarded the title of Essex Champion which had been incorporated in this year's Southend Open.

If you read the entry form you might see that it states:

"Hampshire players must be currently affiliated to the Hampshire Chess Association either through their club, or as an individual member.
Non-Hampshire players are eligible to win money prizes as well as Hampshire players."

The bit where you are asked for money also includes:

"Affiliation to HCA as Individual member (£4.50)........"

Anyone can enter. For John or Ian to be eligible to win a Hampshire Trophy they need to be affiliated presumably as individual members.
