I imagine your last sentence is a general comment, but for the avoidance of doubt the dates of the 4NCL are nothing at all to do with me.

In view of the discussion about Junior Chess and the (somewhat off topic) comments in the Women's World Championship thread, it's perhaps worth noting that in effect you require the permission of your National Federation to play in this event.

Good point. However, as the relevant Director I don't see players having any problems :D

Thanks MIke. I'll add it to the list. Any website info you can give me? I was surprised to see it wasn't listed on the ECF calendar.

I hesitate to suggest anything that involves other people doing work, but to have this in a format that I could subscribe to with my computer's calendar would be extremely useful. Google has a calendar tool that syncs to many other applications, for instance.

On a related subject, what do people think are the best sources for getting lists of forthcoming overseas, FIDE rated events? I'm thinking about my holidays for the next year or so.

An up-to-date version of Harmen Jonkman's long since defunct calendar would be ideal (http://www.chess-calendar.nl/history2007.htm). The best one I'm aware of is the FIDE one (http://www.fide.com/calendar/tournaments). Chess Calendar (http://www.chess-calendar.com/#0) used to be good, but updates have become much less frequent in the last few months. I'm not aware of anything else that's worth looking at, other than national federation sites if looking for tournaments in specific countries.

It's not a complete listing, but some ideas are available in this thread:

http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2300

More trying to pick out the best-of-the-best.

There is also a reader's letter in the January 2011 BCM that speaks highly of popping over to France to play in chess tournaments there. Apparently, the pairings are done for the next round of a tournament by accessing a central computer at the FFE (French equivalent of the ECF), which sounds very impressive.

It also sounds very much like a function done too high up the structure. If the central computer goes down, then all the tournaments relying on it have a problem.
