Fake Facebook and MSN profiles?

Post by John Upham » Wed Jul 14, 2010 3:39 pm

Have you been bothered recently by fake Facebook profiles inviting you to be their friend or fake MSN Live messenger invitations?

Both another member of this forum and myself have been invited to become friends by fake profiles some of which contained defamatory pseudo information.

Events of this nature should be reported.

If you have (especially if the profile was allegedly for myself) then please pm me.

Since posting this, one of the fake profiles (the one with the picture of the chap from Brighton with the image of Jesus Christ has been removed).

If have any more problems with this then contacting http://apps.facebook.com/clickceop/?ref=mf seems to do the trick!

Recently there has been a steady stream of offensive Facebook friend suggestions aimed (it would appear) at the English chess community.

I am pretty confident I know who is responsible.

Has anyone else been annoyed by these?

Yes.

I'm pretty confident I know who is responsible as well, unless, of course, it's someone else pretending to be that person.

I think there may be two or three people involved, two of whom are egging the central person on. These idiots seem to find the whole situation amusing.

One person, who was sent a pornographic image on one of these fake profiles, informed me that her young daughter caught a glimpse of the image and was upset by it.

So it is not just a question of a practical joke; it's a more serious issue.

I do not use YM so I cannot rule it out.

Some of the fake FB profiles include :

* Dongqireiping Sh*tita
* Osman Mansour
* Stavros Peetrii
* Edna Welthorpe
* Wissell Bloah
* Bistia Litty
* JohannWolfgangvon Goethe-Mallesta
* Qatif Auhbez
* Peter William
* Qatif Auhbezz
* S*iitfaced K*ckmaster
* Fork Ewe
* F*kk Hal
* Chaim Amoron

Apologies if anyone is upset by reading these names but I am getting fed up with this childish nonsense as are a whole crop of others. :oops:

The Peter William profile is of Peter William Sutcliffe in case anyone is curious.

I think what is most important here is that we stop encouraging this type of activity,(although I appreciate by making this post I am doing the opposite) it has absolutely nothing to do with chess and in posting it on the ECF Forum only encourages those creating it to continue.

If John and Andrew have received these “friend requests” they should immediately report them to facebook and in the case of instances as reported by Andrew Martin inform the police. To publish on the Forum the fake FB profiles achieves nothing other than to encourage the infantile behaviour of others

Furthermore if John, Andrew or any other forum member believe that they know who is responsible they should not hesitate in informing facebook and the appropriate authorities

A members email address is not published here and so this is nothing to do with us!

This is the non-chess section and therefore the discussion is permissible,although I agree with Carol that too much publicising of this stuff only encourages the originator.

John, if you have hard evidence as to who is creating these profiles, you should make it known.

If not, then it just points up the obvious flaw in the way Facebook operates. Luckily,the plus points outweigh the flaws.

It's not unknown, I have had a few emails from Stewart Reuben's AOL account which has clearly been hacked - do I take much notice of them?

NO...

For a moment I thought that John Upham's list of FB profiles was a list of new 4NCL team names and I was beginning to agree with LB.

The latest piece of idiocy from this person is a FB profile called "Welove Nonces" The profile image is the ECF logo. One of the friends of this profile is Brian Eley.

This is now getting out of hand. A number of members of this forum are being targeted. :evil:
