Top players in football shirts?

Post by JustinHorton » Thu Mar 10, 2011 7:50 am

The Guardian's long-running football column, The Knowledge, has been carrying an item on sports stars wearing the shirts of their favourite teams during competition. Do people know of any photos of top chessplayers doing the same?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Ivanchuk comes to mind. Is "his" team Real Madrid?

Vasilios Kotronias seems to have a strikingly large wardrobe of football shirts of various clubs.

The shirt is, I think, Athletic Bilbao.

Kotronias. (Though again, what's the team?)

I seem to remeber Paul Motwani wearing all sorts of football shirts at the British Championships.

David Eggleston frequently wears a Newcastle United shirt to chess events.

I used to wear a lot of Arsenal shirts but got so much abuse going into pubs after playing chess that they are now only worn when I feel I can do so safely. After the fortnight the team have just had I would probably be far safer now though

That's an Ajax shirt. They've recently changed sponsor to AEGON, so the infamous vertical ABN-AMRO lettering down the side of the shirt is no more.

I certainly do not qualify as a top chess player, but I did ensure that I my photograph on the Officials page on the ECF website featured a glimpse of the appropriate shirt.

Why would chess players, when playing chess, wear clothing depicting some new-fangled sport? It is quite common for them to wear clothing depicting their team. Thus Lawrence Cooper and I both wore the same type of blazer in Beijing in 2008 as we were representing teamGB.
Did Loz not get hot wearing a lot of Arsenal shirts?
