The master game

Post by Matthew Turner » Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:45 am

Yesterday I looked up The master game on Youtube (searching for chess the master game) and found some interesting things. There is a fifteen year old Nigel Short defeating Tony Miles.

Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAgvAL60Blk
Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0_y8dHRR30
Part 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97jTp6LMzdU

I have a couple of questions about this game.
1. Why couldn't Tony play 41.....Nxd4?
2. Does anybody know what the time control was?

If you prefer a little bit of light relief then this is quite a funny spoof http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu3OG9qhvhM
I guess they have used a famous game and it looks like the players must know a bit about chess.

Awesome link James and highly recommended for someone (like me) who recalls them all with some affection....

In series 1-3 it was 40 moves in 2.5 hours, but I don't know what the second time control was.

In series 4-6 it was 40 moves in 2 hours, followed by all moves in an hour.

If games were drawn the re-plays were at faster time controls.

I think the only way we will really know why he did not play that move is to ask him. He crops up from time to time at big events, but is not easy to pin down - I have never met anybody who has spoken to nigel short in real life.

By the way - we could make a new version of the master game - it would be so easy to do, provided that a couple of masters were willing to agree to provide voice talk. I imagine the real difficulty would be in getting the loser to cooperate in this.
Who is up for a "master game" at the 4ncl this weekend? I could bring along a voice talk recorder (well, actually, my phone) and try getting a few words from the players in the analysis room.
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

Yeah, I'd be up for that.

Because I'm always flat-out on the Saturday afternoon and never have masses of dead time.

I walked passed him in the street once and therefore I can confirm Nosher does actually exist. I was also in a newsagents when Vlad Kramnik came in to buy some cigarettes. In that case he was playing in a tournament over the road. My encounter with Nigel Short was entirely random.

I've said before that I worked for the company that once sponsored Nigel, and I met him 2 or 3 times. I always found him very approachable and ready to chat.

Can you help solve Matthews request then? I am sure he would be quite willing to give you a free 30 minute coaching session as a reward for your answering of this question.

I'm not quite sure why Short should have particular insight into the reason why Miles didn't play a move. Although the answer seems pretty obvious, if you watch the video - he(/they) both missed it. Otherwise they would have mentioned it.
