King's Tournament (5th)
King's Tournament (5th)
I have followed the round One of the 5 King's Tournament, and it's amazing to see the Worlds Number 2 to be playing so potently in his game against Nakamura.
However I feel Nakamura made a few crucial mistakes and relatively early on.
And another inspirational game is how Ivanchuk finds such creative ideas in his game.
My money is on Magnus to win the Tournament.
It appears that these 6 players are going to find it incredibly hard with black. In addition to this How many games will be decisive so far there has been a rejection of quick draws, although the six participants are great fighting Professional geniuses.

Very nice video of Nisipeanu explaining his win against Ivanchuk here:

He is a funny guy. The refutation of 20...Rh6, and his reaction to the blunder near the end, are the highlights.

If you are a member of ICC they analyse the games on "Game of the day"!
It's quite entertaining and educational

Re: King's Tournament (5th)
I see Carlsen is now on top of the live ratings:
http://chess.liverating.org/
Is this the first time he has been there for a while?
Anyone think there will be 4 players above 2800 at one time any time soon?

Well, If Ivanchuk will win all his games in bazna then surely he'll be 2800+ (can't see him winning all his remaining games)Christopher Kreuzer wrote:Anyone think there will be 4 players above 2800 at one time any time soon?

Re: King's Tournament (5th)
Anyone know if Karjakin can win that rook endgame?

Re: King's Tournament (5th)
It must be close to winning in practice with the extra pawn and Black's rook on a7 very passive, as well as threats to the Black king. I'd expect White to win that.

Re: King's Tournament (5th)
I'm not sure, all that true of course but the 2nd rook makes it impossible for white to transfer the king to the q-side. I might look stupid in a minute if white can make a mating threat work. But I don't see it, so I think black might be hanging onJames Coleman wrote:It must be close to winning in practice with the extra pawn and Black's rook on a7 very passive, as well as threats to the Black king. You might be right, I'd assumed White would play 47.g5 rather than 47.h5 to be honest

I thought 47.g5 was a better attempt as well. Maybe it doesn't work either and Karjakin went for this line instead?

Re: King's Tournament (5th)
I think I understand why Karjakin set up the g4-h5formation, it keeps black completely passive and being able to shelter the king from lateral rook checks on h4 might be important (certainly more important that it would be if the was only one pair of rooks on the board).Christopher Kreuzer wrote:I thought 47.g5 was a better attempt as well. But still looks like black is just hanging on

Re: King's Tournament (5th)
Which move was that? I'm looking at it after 61.Kh3 and it looks like White wins the h6 pawn or a pair of rooks come off (61...Rf3+ 62.Kh2 Rxg4 63.Rc7+ Rf7, etc, er can't see more than that).Paul Cooksey wrote:But still looks like black is just hanging on

Re: King's Tournament (5th)
Well, that was a quick finish! Not sure whether anything was missed there. That brings Karjakin level with Carlsen, both on 4/6. They meet in the last round (with three more rounds before then). I wonder if both g5 and h5 (earlier) were winning, or whether one was "better" than the other?
